The booster shake-up is the story of the day. Beyond the God Packs themselves, the headline functional change is the end of the guaranteed foil in every pack — MaRo [clarified](https://markrosewater.tumblr.com/post/82...
Quick Hits
- Booster packs are changing again. Per EDHREC, a Blake Rasmussen article on the WotC site announced God Packs and changes to both Collector and Play boosters arriving with Nauctis; DraftSim frames it as the first major pack overhaul since Play Boosters launched in 2024, landing in 2027. MaRo confirms the guaranteed foil is going away but packs aren't shrinking — "Every pack will still have 14 cards."
- Reality Fracture is carrying the game right now. DraftSim's meta report says FRA is reshaping and reviving a post-bans Standard, and a Wizards gameplay engineer made an unexpected announcement about Reality Fracture Limited on Arena.
- Salt Score 2026 voting is open at EDHREC — the annual community salt polls are live, with a full week of sodium-flavored companion content.
- Chaos Orb and Falling Star will never get official Old School-style errata. MaRo says no dexterity cards in high-end tournament play, and casual players should enjoy them as printed — house rules welcome.
- Amonkhet is on the return list, and "post-Bolas is different." MaRo says -1/-1 counters would be explored on a return, but aren't required.
Set News
The booster shake-up is the story of the day. Beyond the God Packs themselves, the headline functional change is the end of the guaranteed foil in every pack — MaRo clarified that slot 14 stays filled regardless. On why change takes so long, his print-capacity answer is illuminating: WotC works with "a lot of printers," and the biggest constraint is that orders must be placed far in advance. DraftSim also has a refreshed explainer on all three booster pack types if you're trying to figure out what to buy going forward.
Also announced: a Secret Lair Festival In A Box for Atlanta 2026, hitting the Secret Lair webstore October 19.
Commander Corner
Salt week dominates. Once you've voted, EDHREC has the full buffet: the salty cards their writers refuse to face, the 10 most-played salty cards in Commander (Teferi's Protection need not be named, but you know), 10 high-salt cards the community got wrong, and — because it's salt week — a genuinely odd data dive into the sodium content difference between the USA and France.
- Flickering Hound gets the five-ways treatment from EDHREC — the name may be hilariously literal, but blink players will find real payload here.
- The Commander Clash Podcast covers deckbuilding traps — worth a listen before your next 100-card brew session.
- DraftSim has a 19-change upgrade guide for Tramplesaurus Rex, plus rankings of all four Azorius precons and all 23 Insect commanders.
- A heartwarming mailbag moment: a player thanked MaRo for Seluma, Light of Aysen, the five-color angel commander they requested years ago. Response: "High five to be applied."
Competitive Scene
DraftSim's Standard meta report finds the format thriving since its most recent round of bans, with Reality Fracture cards pushing new decks to the forefront — a nice change of pace from a format many had written off. For the historically minded, Best Standard Deck Ever pits Faeries (2008) against Mono-Blue Devotion (2013) in a battle of all-time tempo greats. And if you're brewing anything spell-heavy, DraftSim ranked the 27 best second-spell payoffs in the game.
Limited & Draft
DraftSim reports that a Wizards gameplay engineer made an unexpected announcement about Reality Fracture Limited on Arena — worth a read if FRA draft is your current addiction, and per DraftSim, a sizable chunk of the community already calls it the best set of the year. Meanwhile, MaRo says R&D is "warming up to basic landcycling" in Standard sets — good news for drafters who found the basic-cyclers in Marvel and Reality Fracture far more usable than their strictly-typed cousins.
Design & Lore
- MaRo posted Part 3 of 3 of the Reality Fracture Vision Design Handoff — the actual document handed off to Set Design, a must-read for design-process junkies.
- On Auspicious Aquarium's anti-changeling clause: MaRo explains they need a named creature type to keep changelings in check, and the brushwag specifically was reused from Embiggen "because it was funny." He also publicly self-corrected on Epic Struggle — it doesn't care about creature types at all. Designers: they're just like us.
- Duskmourn always had its own core antagonist in the plan — no Eldrazi-in-the-haunted-house iteration, despite what custom setters might have brewed.
- Noticed more lifegain lately? MaRo says it's "some of both" — a design philosophy shift and the pendulum swinging at the same time.
