Quick Hits
- Reality Fracture is officially the story of the week. Draftsim reports a serialized mega rare from Collector Boosters commanding a $3,000 price tag, Joe Dyer is already probing its impact on Vintage and Legacy, and MTGGoldfish's latest Against the Odds built a Standard deck where literally every nonland card (and some lands!) is Jace.
- The Halloween "Corn Maze" Secret Lair Superdrop is fully spoiled — all 51 cards are up at Draftsim, with Universes Beyond crossovers including KPop Demon Hunters, Labyrinth, and Marvel Zombies.
- Reign of Dragons, the new beginner Commander precon tied to Foundations, releases today (Oct. 2) — EDHREC has a full precon guide covering the commanders and whether it's worth the buy.
- The Zeta Set do-over is scheduled. After last month's paused queue and vanishing stock, WotC is bringing back the Secret Lair x MSCHF sale on Dec. 9 with a 24-hour order window (EDHREC).
- EDHREC finishes its site-wide swap from Synergy to Lift, now live on /commanders, /tags, and /combos pages after the earlier card-page rollout.
Set News
The Corn Maze Superdrop is the headline: Draftsim's card gallery follows their earlier news piece on the drop, so you can now see every treatment before the drop window. Meanwhile, if you're drafting on Arena, Draftsim found a hidden Jace emote easter egg tucked into Hexhaven — fitting for a set where Jace's presence envelopes the whole school. And for Universes Beyond watchers: asked about a Star Trek teaser and the NYCC preview panel, Mark Rosewater says plans are still being worked out and he doesn't believe NYCC livestreams.
Commander Corner
Reign of Dragons isn't the only Foundations precon content — EDHREC also published The Educator's Guide to the Foundations Precons, a teacher-friendly walkthrough leaning on "reading the card explains the card."
Reality Fracture's elder sphinxes are getting serious attention. Aerid Konstrari pulled double duty: Draftsim's Bracket 3 guide calls it perhaps the most annoying of the elder sphinx cycle, while EDHREC's Heartwood Token Bonanza goes deep on the token plan. Draftsim also covered The Ur-Sphinx — essentially The Ur-Dragon for sphinxes, a design nobody predicted. On the aggro-stax side, EDHREC's Thalia, the Survivor deck tech argues the set's mirrored pairs are one of the biggest design home runs in recent memory.
Other notables: Draftsim's Multiverse Reforged upgrade guide offers 15 easy swaps ("if a set only has one precon, it needs to be a banger" — and it delivered); EDHREC ranks the Top 10 combo enchantments for Pia, Aether Ascetic; and Levi of The Thought Vessel kicks off Salt Week (Oct. 5–9) with a timely reminder that salt isn't a ban list. Rounding out the pile: EDHREC's Fire and Ice data dive on Kibo, a look at Reality Fracture's best Minotaur cards, and Draftsim's freshly updated ranking of all 52 Orzhov commanders.
Competitive Scene
Joe Dyer's twin format columns both dig into Reality Fracture: Vintage 101: Reality Is Doomed and This Week in Legacy: Fractured. Over on r/magicTCG, a Dimir Tempo primer explores what its author calls the most popular deck in Legacy right now. And if you missed it above — 40 Jaces is exactly what it sounds like.
Limited & Draft
Draftsim uncovered a Hexhaven Invigorator combo in Reality Fracture Limited — new sets mean new draft-around synergies, and this one's worth knowing before your next pod. For the design-curious, Rosewater explained that R&D's first draft usually happens mid-vision design, and they've occasionally retreated back to sealed when a format needed more oven time.
Finance & Market
The serialized Reality Fracture mega rare is the chase card of the moment at ~$3,000 — collector booster results may vary, painfully. Also mark your calendar: the Zeta Set Chaos Vault sale returns Dec. 9 with a strict 24-hour order window, WotC's answer to last month's botched queue.
Design & Lore
Rosewater's blog was a goldmine today:
- The "Echo Sheet" technique behind Reality Fracture's paired characters is "a big ask to execute" and won't be used lightly — but he doesn't think Meld or Partner With need it anyway.
- On whether new Empower cards create a flavor problem by producing non-legendary planeswalkers: "The story would need to explain it."
- Birthday trivia: Bloomburrow's green-blue faction was almost Turtles, not Frogs, and R&D explored a Rootwalla-style "puffing up" ability. Tam's design name was Petra.
- Responding to the "hat sets" critique, MaRo argues many sets have only one typal theme, which is usually one archetype among many options.
- Fans of Prepare (already an all-timer mechanic for some) may see it on spellshapers if Mercadia ever returns. He'd also like to return to Duskmourn, and notes cross-set card interactions are considered in set and play design, not vision design.
