Design & Lore

  • Birthday trivia drop: Tam's name in design was Petra (Blogatog).
  • Rules nerds, take note: Prepared works by creating an exile copy with a special exception written into the rules, and MaRo explains when design can justify that kind of one-off carve-out.
  • Why are the FRA Commander deck's Echoverse legendaries unpaired? MaRo explains that Echoverse versions of dead characters went to the Commander deck unpaired — save Gideon and his memorial.
  • That mysterious "late creative pivot"? MaRo says it's about story elements tying the sets together — like Echoverse Ral arriving with zero explanation.
  • Flavor of the day: Swords to Plowshares "takes away their will to do violence," and the peace that follows is life-affirming (Blogatog). Elsewhere: Vryn's design space is fine despite Jace's death, MaRo hopes for a Duskmourn return someday, and he pushed back on the "hat set" critique — most sets carry one typal theme as a single archetype among many, with only dedicated typal sets offering multiple.

Hey Mark, I have been playing Timeless lately (my favorite format) and I was wondering what the flavor is on Swords to Plowshares. Lightning bolt I summon lightning to hurt someone, giant growth I make something bigger, Emrakul, the Exigent Doom I summon to fight my enemies. What magic am I doing to, say, a dragon that causes them to gain life?

Why weren’t there any actual creature cards that were both Soldier and Wizard. You have exactly two pre-existing creatures that are both types. Why weren’t anymore made?

If/When: Empower Bolas

Howdy! I’m sorry if this has already been pointed out or asked. The commander deck echoverse legendaries (sans Nissa) were selected because those characters are all dead, correct? So a new Avacyn didn’t need to be created since she’s dead in the “real” multiverse.

So I learned recently that technically in the rules the Prepared mechanic works by creating a copy of the prepared spell in exile, which is then cast when a player casts the prepared spell. While usually copies of spells in zones other than the stack would go away when state-based actions are checked, there’s a special exception written into the rules for Prepared. On occasion, you’ll talk about mechanics and say “we wanted to do it but couldn’t make it work in the rules”. Does that mean “we didn’t think it was an interesting enough mechanic for it to be worth the added game complexity of writing in a special rules exception that lets it work”, “In this case the mechanic would be harder to do than a one-time rules exception”, or some other thing? I just didn’t realize that design sometimes writes in one-off exceptions like that and I’m curious about what it takes for the decision to do that to be made.

Hey Mark. Just a teasers question. Will we be getting a Star Trek teaser from you??? Also, do you know if a video (livestream or otherwise) will happen for the preview panel at New York Comic Con???

does Vryn have even less design space now that Jace is dead?
Markrosewater · 2026-10-01
Surveil and card draw are in every colour’s slice of the pie (albeit often limited, like some colours being able to cantrip but not go card positive) and Empower Jace is available in every colour, but if Empower [X character] were to do something not in every slice, such as gain life, would it naturally be restricted to fewer colours?
