Set News

The big question — did players like Empower Jace? — will get a real answer "pretty soon after the set releases," per Rosewater, who notes the early anecdotal data looks good. Exhibit A from his inbox: a Sultai Empower Jace/graveyard player who ulted a full-art Jace, Reality Sculptor at prerelease and declared the set "top tier for me".

One sour note in a sweet weekend: a player flagged that Reality Fracture gets "just over a month" before the next set arrives, and Rosewater sympathizes — but says R&D doesn't "have the freedom to space them equidistant."

Commander Corner

EDHREC's FRA coverage is firing on all cylinders: a fun-factor read on the new commanders, a holistic take on how good the set actually is for Commander, the best commons and uncommons for budget builders (Vigorbloom Charm and Sphinx's Approach in the spotlight), and the cards EDHREC's writers are personally sleeving up, Ingris Stingerquill among them. Their enchantment review finds the set surprisingly light on enchantments, with Identity Echo front and center.

Precon beat: Calling All Angels, the Foundations-associated beginner Commander deck, lands Oct. 2; EDHREC already has the teardown on the commanders and whether it's a good buy.

Evergreen shelf: Draftsim ranked the 25 best Infect commanders (Vishgraz, the Doomhive in the mix), catalogued all 33 Selesnya enchantments, and — for the flavor pilots — built a Stardew Valley-themed Commander deck. Junimos in the 99.

Limited & Draft

Draftsim distilled four lessons from the Reality Fracture prerelease — required reading before your first FRA draft. Over on r/magicTCG, a self-described "blockhead" Pauper grinder ("I like to bolt and swing") is crowdsourcing tips for leveling up at the new format.

Blogatog limited nuggets: Rescue Girl earned high fives for generating a tenth mana to hard-cast Emrakul, then resetting Liliana's exhaust to reanimate it when she died. Jace tokens are creating "really puzzling board states", and Rosewater isn't sure whether Wizards tracks how often that happens. He also agreed with a player that the basic landcyclers are an elegant fix — big-mana commons that would rot in constructed get a real job in the draft skeleton.

Calendar note: a player prepping a birthday sealed RCQ asked the subreddit what to expect — worth a skim if a sealed qualifier is on your radar.

Finance & Market

Monday's Chaos Vault drop: the Odds and Ends Secret Lair Commander deck, plus The Oddlands — five special versions, one per basic land type, each containing 10 copies of its respective basic.

Per r/magicTCG, Sphinx Ambassador is now the most expensive sphinx card in the game.

For the token completionists: a collector flagged a Collector Booster token (a 2/1 white Insect with flying plus a 1/1 white Warrior) that doesn't even appear on market sites, and Rosewater says he'll pass along the request for an official per-set token checklist.

Design & Lore

A loaded Blogatog file today:

• The future of Empower: the mechanic "was designed to allow us to do it" again, though Rosewater can't confirm any plans. The rules already support multiple Empower mechanics in one set, but he's "skeptical" we'd see it outside a high-complexity set like Modern Horizons.
• Why Jace, Multiverse Architect isn't five-color: this Jace "couldn't be more anti-green" — he's subverting the natural order of the whole Multiverse.
• Tam stayed creature-side because she "wasn't a planeswalker for most of the story," future planeswalker Tams are on the table, and the set was already high on planeswalkers.
• Don't expect separate Jace tokens for each Aberration — that story element came long after vision design.
• History corner: mana burn existed mostly because it was flavorful, a "slight balance to producing too much mana" (source), and Mana Drain's mana-burn clause wasn't a major drawback in practice, whatever the original designers might have thought. • Color-pie philosophy: it's possible green has more breaks than red — people just understand red better enough to spot them.
• And for anyone hoping a Standard-legal set would go full Commander Legends multiplayer draft: "If." Standard-legal sets are specifically not multiplayer-focused.
