Set News

With the full gallery out, the shape of Reality Fracture is finally clear — including the one-per-pack character pairs Rosewater confirmed as the set's technical flex, answering a question that had preview-watchers digging back through interviews for a reveal many never clocked.

Also clarified on Blogatog: the Turbulent land cycle. Only three have surfaced so far, all in the Jace precon, and MaRo says the rest of the cycle is "slowly rolling out" — so don't panic about completing the set just yet.

Two structural notes from the Q&A queue: Reality Fracture consciously skipped Sagas (they're deciduous, and the set "didn't feel a need to"), and the anti-Jace faction never got a mechanic because that side is "basically the Lorwyn Five (minus Jace plus Vraska)" — not enough as-fan, and mostly planeswalkers.

Meanwhile, Draftsim updated its complete list of Universes Within products — handy if you're tracking the in-Multiverse conversions of cards like Eleven, the Mage or Blanka, Ferocious Friend.

Commander Corner

MTGGoldfish has a 10-swap upgrade guide for the Reality Fracture precon, patching "the glaring issues" and retooling it into a proper Polymorph deck — an easy entry point if you picked it up for the new legends.

Those legends came up on Blogatog, where a player tallied the precon's face cards at mostly MV 6+ (five at 7, one at 9, one at 10, by their count) and called it a disservice to fun designs. MaRo's response: "What you dislike makes another player very happy and we have to design for everyone" — this deck was deliberately a slower one.

Asked why the Commander-deck Jace isn't green, MaRo pointed out that Jace "is very much trying to change the natural order of things" — rather the opposite of green's whole deal.

For entertainment value: Commander Clash S20 E18 pits three budget decks against a lone cEDH list in Archenemy Commander. And over on Reddit, a Jumpscare precon owner is crowdsourcing cuts for Threats Around Every Corner, Paranormal Analyst, and an ambitious Omniscience.

New to the format? Draftsim refreshed two evergreen rankings worth bookmarking: power-matters commanders and the worst/overrated commanders.

Competitive Scene

In Pauper, Joe Dyer's "Zeta in Paper" digs into how the new set's cards are performing at paper tables — required reading before your next FNM if you're on the format's bleeding edge.

In Standard, the latest Much Abrew asks whether The Sackville-Bagginses can anchor a "mutagen-style" aristocrat-sacrifice deck: pump your creatures huge, then cash them in. Jank tier, but that's the appeal.

Limited & Draft

Casual Spike posted a Reality Fracture Limited overview built as a jumping-off point for the brand-new format — archetypes, signals, and a place to start your pick-order homework now that spoilers are complete.

Rosewater also passed along a high-five to the Arena team after a player praised the mixed-up draft format. And for Thunder Junction fans hoping to revisit the plane (its Rabiah score sits at a 7, per the asker), MaRo offered hope with a classic line: "Magic is a hungry monster, so I think we'll return to most worlds eventually."

Finance & Market

Draftsim's spike roundup for 9/12–9/18 confirms preview season is moving singles, with Jace-centric Reality Fracture cards the week's headline driver — check the list before your next buy order.

On the reprint front, MTGGoldfish hosts the Foundations Commander decklists (all reprints, $29.99 MSRP each). And some collectors are grumbling that WotC didn't reprint the Jace basics from Ixalan in the new Commander deck — a missed flavor layup, by their account.

Design & Lore

The Hexhaven reveal is the weekend's juiciest lore nugget: Strixhaven's structure left nothing in the tank for sequels — "We didn't save anything to use later" — so Hexhaven was built fresh to finally deliver the ally-colored colleges players had long wanted.

On mechanics: if Konstrari's artifact-matters theme felt thin, that's because it's "mostly a ramp theme not an artifact theme. The token is an artifact more for flavor". And Draftsim has a full Empower Jace primer covering rules, history, and the best cards for the set's signature mechanic.

Modern Horizons chatter: MaRo now considers MH "more Time Spiral 2 than Future Sight 2", and since MH sets meet the premier-set sales bar required of supplemental products, the door stays open for more. He also rated the odds of a single card using both +1/+1 and -1/-1 counters as low in premier sets, "better" in something like MH.

Elsewhere: readers are showering praise on Allison Luhrs' Reality Fracture story — one called it heart-wrenching and teed up Tam's future — and MaRo agrees the set and story landed. He also mused, unprompted, that "Squirrel Queen sounds like a cool Magic card" — file that away.

Finally, a provocative read: Draftsim runs an op-ed arguing "Universes Beyond Understands Magic Better Than Magic Does," opening from the premise that Magic "has always been better at geography than history." Worth your time, whether you agree or want to argue at the counter. And in kitchen-table news: someone homebrewed a Ravnica Clue + Planechase "Murder on the Planar Express" variant, and one player completed a Rock-Paper-Scissors-Lizard-Spock set for determining play/draw — chaos-mapping the dice roll since time immemorial.

is it still true that green only gets haste if the card is aimed at constructed. how does shang-chi’s ability fit into this?

When a human is a zombie, it’s a Zombie. But any other species is Dragon Zombie, Elf Zombie, Goblin Zombie, Zombie Snake, Zombie Minotaur, etc. If other species get included, then Humans should too, regardless of power-level, because I believe games should be consistent. Can you pass along changing human zombies to “Human Zombie”?

I really really liked the Hexhaven colleges creatively, so I’m a bit disappointed that they’re only for reality fracture. Is there any chance they’ll be revisited in the future?

Hello Mark! I was just wondering if there’s a new edition of your Mechanical Color Pie article in the works. Thanks!

What do I add to these decks to make them good playable commander decks?

Hello Mark! Just wanted to say I’m caught up on the story and Wow! High fives all around for what an awesome story and set. It was very heart-wrenching and I was definitely in tears. What a cool way to bring so many things together though! I’m definitely excited to see what happens next and what we’ll see from Tam in the future! The cards are also so cool and really show the unsettling nature of Hexhaven. The art this set has been next level for sure! Thanks all around and I hope you have a nice weekend!

You’ve mentioned that you came up with “Mel” and that it used to be “Melvin”– is it not named after the infamous (among older nerds) “Story of Mel” about the guy who had an incredibly intricate knowledge of (and obsession with) mechanical workings of computer programming?

Piggybacking off the Hexhaven question: obviously the school itself no longer exists after the events of Reality Fracture, but is it possible that Strixhaven would open ally-colored colleges with different subjects and/or mechanical identities on a future visit to Arcavios? Or is Strixhaven being an enemy-colored faction environment too central to its identity?
