Soul Sisters Rise From the Ban Ashes While The Hobbit Warms the Standard Bench

Quick Hits

  • Post-ban Standard is reshuffling fast. MTGGoldfish Podcast 601 digests week one of The Hobbit and post-ban Standard — and per the title's asterisk, the new set is seeing essentially no play — while Draftsim reports the August 10 bans have unexpectedly resurrected the Soul Sisters lifegain archetype around Haliya, Guided by Light.
  • Rakdos is bullying Arena Direct. Draftsim says "soul crushing" Rakdos decks are dominating the events dangling an $800 The Hobbit Collector Booster Box as the prize.
  • Y'shtola, Night's Blessed has crossed 50,000 decks on EDHREC — the format's top commander — and her designers sat down with EDHREC to talk about the milestone.
  • Hatsune Miku goes print-to-demand. MTGStocks breaks down the Commander deck's new fulfillment process — the return of print-to-demand — and what it could mean for singles prices. (Correct link)
  • MaRo cops to a leak. Rosewater says he was punished by the brand team after answering a question at a Pro Tour event with information he wasn't supposed to give away.

Set News

  • The post-ban Standard shakeout is the story of the week: MTGGoldfish's crew walks through week one of The Hobbit and finds the set largely absent from the new metagame (asterisk very much included).
  • Hungry for Reality Fracture info? Rosewater says far too much has been revealed to summarize on his blog, and points questioners to the MagicCon Amsterdam preview panel video (watch part one).
  • Mystery Booster Commander is spreading beyond MagicCons — per Rosewater, Gavin's new video lays out the (much longer) list of conventions where you can find it.
  • For kitchen-table Marvel brewers debating Standard-legal vs. eternal cards, MaRo's advice is simple: use any card with the property on it.

Competitive Scene

Finance & Market

  • The big finance question of the day: Hatsune Miku and the return of print-to-demand. MTGStocks examines how the Commander deck's new fulfillment process could reshape individual card prices — worth a read before you speculate on singles.

Design & Lore

  • Birthday trivia of the day: Enter the Infinite was inspired by Rosewater's own Unglued card Mine! Mine! Mine!
  • Design-file minutiae from the Blogatog: X-spells get filed at the end of the mana-value slots, while Spree cards sit at their base MV.
  • On the eternal "flavor justifies anything" argument, MaRo's take is succinct: "Flavor is very flexible. It can justify just about anything. That doesn't mean it should."
  • Could a hypothetical Legions II work with modern tools like Adventure, Omen, and Prepared? Rosewater says the question isn't "can we?" but "should we?" — though the tools now exist.
  • Reprint policy nuggets: Godzilla-style renames of in-universe cards are an option, but the bar is high, and "co-restricting" paired functional reprints to 4 total copies is not off the table if 8 Inspectors ever became a problem.
  • Trivia corner: Richard Garfield's most recent set was Dominaria, which Rosewater notes had no banned or restricted cards. And no, MaRo doesn't know the secret three-letter set codes either — "things aren't public until they are."

Hi Mark, just wondering where you put X spells or cards with Spree in the design file for mana value? For example, are Condescend and Requisition Raid at the 1 mv slot, or do you put them at a mana value you expect players to actually cast them?

Why are the three letter codes from upcoming sets secret information? It seems like they’d generally be easy to guess once the set names are revealed, and they don’t contain any new information about the set.

Regarding reading mana costs, I think people read it backwards because there’s less danger of ambiguity. “Two and a black” could be misheard as “two black”, but “a black and two” is hard to misinterpret
