The Hobbit Releases, Standard Bans Shake Up the Meta, and R&D Addresses Limited Pacing

Quick Hits

  • The Hobbit is Here: Universes Beyond's The Hobbit is officially in players' hands, bringing a massive wave of new commanders like Smaug and Gandalf, alongside a fresh Limited environment to explore.
  • Standard Shakeup: A recent wave of "overwhelming bans" of three highly problematic cards has just hit Standard, completely redefining the format's competitive landscape just in time for the new set's release.
  • Limited Pacing Concerns Addressed: Following player complaints that modern Limited formats are too heavily skewed toward aggressive tempo (rendering mechanics like Spacecraft and Battles unplayable), Head Designer Mark Rosewater confirmed that R&D is actively working to slow down draft environments on average.
  • Mystery Booster 2 Spoilers: Classic Magic video game lore is making its way to the tabletop, with EDHREC diving into deck techs for both Uugguu, the Omniplasm and Arzakon, the final boss from the iconic MicroProse Shandalar game.
  • Legacy Ban Watch: Over in the eternal formats, players are digesting a recent high-profile banning in Legacy, covered in depth by MTGGoldfish.

Set News

  • The Hobbit has officially dropped, and the content sphere is firing on all cylinders. Draftsim is providing deep dives into the set's marquee characters, offering guides on how to pilot all four new Smaug, the Impenetrable commanders and all five new Gandalf variants.
  • If you're looking to build around the Company of Thorin, Draftsim also published a ranking of the 45 best Dwarf cards in Magic history to help you optimize your Dáin of the Ancient Halls builds.
  • Outside of Middle-earth, it appears Mystery Booster 2 is spoiling some wild new commanders. EDHREC is highlighting the rule-breaking Maular, the Next Evolution and a brand new Ooze-centric commander, Uugguu, the Omniplasm.
  • For Pioneer brewers looking to break the format, MTGGoldfish's Against the Odds explores a wild new combo deck looking to break Exalted Sunborn with Molten Duplication.

Commander Corner

Competitive Scene

  • Standard has been completely turned on its head. Following the banning of three massively problematic cards, Draftsim reports that the format's metagame has been completely redefined, opening up the ladder just as The Hobbit releases.
  • Over in Legacy, MTGGoldfish's Joe Dyer dives into the community reaction and fallout from a recent, major card banning in the format.
  • On the topic of bannings, Mark Rosewater took to his blog to clarify that classic cards like Dust to Dust are simply too powerful for current Standard legal sets, shutting down hopes of a Standard-legal reprint.

Limited & Draft

  • With The Hobbit prereleases and drafts in full swing, Draftsim is already flagging the format's biggest traps. Before you windmill slam that bomb rare, make sure you aren't falling for cards like Thranduil's Decree, which underperform despite looking deceptively strong.
  • When asked about how R&D balances overlapping draft archetypes—specifically if pushing Boros and Simic impacts Izzet's design—Rosewater noted that adjacent color pairs must maintain consistency, meaning they absolutely influence the archetypes around them.

Design & Lore

  • Responding to feedback that recent sets like Duskmourn and Outlaws of Thunder Junction feel too heavily focused on upfront value and aggressive tempo, Rosewater offered a reassuring update: R&D is, on average, actively working to slow down Limited environments.
  • Rosewater also pulled back the curtain on worldbuilding for the upcoming underwater set, Nauctis. He confirmed that the mechanical friction of "flying" in an underwater setting was identified as an issue during exploratory design and successfully solved during vision design.
  • For the design-inclined, Rosewater clarified a common piece of R&D shorthand: "N" (as used in his podcast) represents a placeholder number designers haven't finalized yet, whereas "X" on a card represents a variable that the player ultimately chooses.
  • Finally, Rosewater pushed back on the narrative that Wizards is stretching its design teams too thin, confirming that as the company produces more sets per year, they have hired more designers to ensure each set receives the same amount of time and personnel as always.

Hi Mark! Often when you talk about some players’ estrangement from Universes Beyond, you compare it to your “Dark Night of the Soul” when Commander became so dominant. Please say some words to the following disanalogy: I used to love playing Standard and other constructed formats on Arena. But, I can’t do this anymore since I need to play (against) UB cards which I really don’t want. Do you see how you being unhappy with a rising format isn’t the same as formats I play changing fundamentally?

While I’ve always liked Magic’s mechanics, can it be noted that some people (like myself) actually prefer Universes Beyond sets to Magic IP sets, because the flavor to mechanics pipeline is a lot more compelling imo?

Hi Mark, I’m super excited for Nauctis next year because it’s THE set I’ve been waiting for. I studied marine biology and scientific diving in college and love all things nautical and oceany. My favorite animal is a nautilus and there’s only 4 in all of MTG. Is there a good chance that we will get a few more in the set?

When I tried thinking up how to make an underwater world in Magic work, like Nauctis, flying was the first issue I thought of. May I ask how quickly that was solved or similar in Nauctis design? Not asking for HOW it was solved, just if that was a long struggle or more of “but of course this is how” type of thing.

I’ve heard speculation that wotc is “spreading developers thin” to make so many sets. Is there any truth to that? Like are teams smaller/people are on more teams than they used to be? Or has wotc hired more designers to make the higher quantity of card designs per year?
