Quick Hits

  • Standard Shakeup: The August 10 Banned & Restricted announcement delivered massive changes to Standard. With powerhouse cards like Cori-Steel Cutter, Mana Cub, Otter Factory, and Discount Gramma getting the axe, the format is completely wide open just in time for the RCQ circuit. (Draftsim, Reddit)

  • Commander Pro Tour? Don't Hold Your Breath: Despite years of player asking, MaRo firmly stated that a Pro Tour for the Commander format is still a "bad idea." (Blogatog)

Set News

It’s a whirlwind week for Standard. Following the June 29th bans, WotC isn't pulling any punches, issuing an overwhelming list of restrictions that redefine the format's OG landscape. If you're grinding RCQs, you'll need to completely re-evaluate your tier lists—staples like Cori-Steel Cutter and Discount Gramma are officially gone.

Meanwhile, prerelease season for The Hobbit has concluded, and the community is buzzing. If you didn't get your fill over the weekend, Draftsim has your back with first impressions and key takeaways from the prerelease. For the Constructed grinders, MaRo clarified that The Lord of the Rings sets were specifically aimed at Modern power levels, so don't expect to see Gandalf and the fellowship legal in Standard anytime soon.

Looking ahead, players were briefly confused by an influx of Star Trek Universes Beyond spoilers. MaRo explained that these came from demo decks given away at a Star Trek convention, not the upcoming Reality Fracture set. Expect the actual Reality Fracture story to premiere during its preview season, a couple of weeks before the prerelease.

Commander Corner

Before you windmill slam that new legendary on the table, let's look at the brewing landscape. The Hobbit delivers a massive batch of Universes Beyond commanders, including five distinct versions of Gandalf to build around. For the Timmies in the room, MTGStocks is highlighting some spicy underplayed tech to supercharge your Cloud, Ex-SOLDIER decks.

If you're leaning into the new Middle-earth legends, EDHREC has deep dives on Belladonna Took for mono-white token swarms and Brad Boimler for mono-white counters matter. And for the rule-breakers, Maular, the Next Evolution is getting the "Tech the Deck" treatment.

Finally, for players looking to improve their political game, MTGStocks launched a new "Commander Psychology" series focusing on how to effectively paint a target on someone else's back to take the heat off your own board state.

Competitive Scene

With the recent bannings completely nuking the old Standard pecking order, competitive players are currently scrambling to find the format's new boogeyman. If you're tired of aggro ruining your win streak or getting your spells countered for the eleventh billionth time, now is the time to innovate.

In retrospective competitive news, MTGGoldfish is pitting two of the most dominant Standard decks in history against each other in their "Best Standard Deck Ever" bracket: Dragonstorm (2006) versus Rakdos Midrange (2023). Can Rakdos break the midrange curse, or will Bogardan Hellkites rule the day?

Limited & Draft

Now that The Hobbit is on tables, Limited players are dissecting the format. EDHREC has compiled a list of the set's best commons and uncommons to help you prioritize your picks, whether you're drafting at your LGS or building a sweet Hobbit Battle Box from your leftover draft chaff.

On the design side, Blogatog offered some excellent Limited insights this week. MaRo broke down how R&D balances gold cards at common, noting they heavily prefer hybrid mana over traditional gold unless it's a heavily multicolor set. He also touched on archetype synergy, explaining how adjacent draft archetypes (like Boros and Simic) actively influence how they push a third archetype (like Izzet). And if WotC ever forced a 4-color draft format, MaRo noted they would have to print specific hate cards to actively punish drafting a fifth color.

Design & Lore

Mark Rosewater fielded a ton of design questions this week. When asked about the complexity of layers, MaRo acknowledged that while moving ability-removing effects from Layer 6 seems like an intuitive fix, doing so inevitably creates unintuitive interactions elsewhere in the game's rules. He also dropped a fun piece of trivia about the card Rationalization, noting that it originally only traded hands with an opponent, but the card-filtering aspect was added to make it less situational.

On the product side of things, don't expect a new tier of booster packs anytime soon. MaRo noted that local game stores communicated loudly that they prefer fewer product variations, making it highly skeptical that WotC will introduce a mid-tier booster between Play and Collector Boosters.

Also, if you're looking to protect your cardboard, EDHREC has a review of the new Dragon Shield Guildpact Series sleeves dropping this Friday. Whether you're tracking a massive collection or trying to pick up the elusive 2026 Lunar New Year Plains, the community is actively sharing the best storage solutions and tracking tools to manage the modern cardboard crunch.
