No Commander Bans in August B&R as Y'shtola Dethrones Edgar Markov

Quick Hits

  • Commander Gets a Pass: Gavin Verhey confirmed that there are no changes to Commander in today's Banned and Restricted announcement. The Commander Format Panel will meet next month to discuss the format, so don't expect any potential shakeups until after that meeting.
  • A New EDHREC Queen: Final Fantasy's Y'shtola, Night's Blessed has officially become the #2 most popular commander on EDHREC, bumping longtime vampire staple Edgar Markov down the list.
  • The Hobbit Woes: Players are reporting shocking print quality on the newly released The Hobbit Collector Boosters, citing dreadful writing and bleeding on the cards.
  • MaRo on Kindred: Mark Rosewater noted that R&D doesn't actually like the "Kindred" spell type, stating its use in Lorwyn Eclipsed was strictly a callback and not a precedent for supplemental products.
  • Tribal Synergy Trivia: Ever wonder why Werewolves synergize with Wolves, but Vampires don't synergize with Bats? Rosewater explained it was a structural necessity in Innistrad to pad out the modal double-faced card (MDFC) limits.

Set News

Today's Banned and Restricted announcement brings good news for 60-card players: Standard, Legacy, Vintage, and Ranked Brawl are all being left alone. The official stance is that constructed is currently thriving and adapting to the meta without needing intervention. In Universes Beyond news, spoilers continue with new Star Trek cards, including [Christine Chapel, Combat Medic] and [General Chang, Cold Warrior]—the latter of which will feature actual Klingon text. Meanwhile, fans of the upcoming Hatsune Miku Secret Lair will be excited to hear that the drop will apparently feature physical merch bundles alongside the cards.

Commander Corner

It's a massive day for deckbuilders with fresh The Hobbit spoilers. EDHREC writers are already deep-diving into the set's massive Goblin and Elf support, while also brewing unique takes like Blue Landfall helmed by [Gandalf, Shadow's Foe] and Mono-Blue Theft utilizing [Elrond, Moon-Reader]. If you're looking to update older lists, EDHREC also broke down the top 10 most played cards from Streets of New Capenna.

On the format's fringes, players are noting that the new commander Massimo feels severely undertuned, requiring far too much setup for a flimsy payoff. Rulings interactions are also sparking debate, specifically a complex layering question involving [Emrakul, the Promised End] being cast at a player controlling [Sen Triplets]. Finally, if you're looking to flex your rules knowledge or take a trip back in time, players are reminiscing about the Premodern-era creation "15-Card Highlander" (15CH/FCH).

Competitive Scene

With 60-card formats surviving the August 10 B&R update untouched, competitive players can comfortably brew without fear. In Standard, the Selesnya Ouroboroid deck is turning heads and demanding answers, with Spikes analyzing how to handle its suite of heavy hitters. For the equipment enthusiasts, new Hobbit Standard brews are emerging to capitalize on the fresh toys. Over in Pauper, The Hobbit is also making waves, and Joe Dyer at MTGGoldfish has you covered with a deep dive into the best Common Hobbits for the format. Finally, for those intimidated by the Reserved List boogeyman, Vintage players are taking to Reddit to dispel format misconceptions, highlighting that modern Vintage matches often present incredibly intricate, non-greedy gameplay.

Finance & Market

If you're cracking packs this weekend, keep a close eye on your pulls. Multiple players are reporting abysmal print quality on The Hobbit Collector Boosters. Complaints range from faded writing to severe ink bleeding—an important PSA for finance-minded players looking to grade or trade high-end Hobbit cards right out of the gate.

Design & Lore

Mark Rosewater's Tumblr was firing on all cylinders today, offering a wealth of insights into R&D's philosophy and the game's history.

  • The Kindred Dilemma: While players have suggested using "Kindred" as a Commander-only tool, Rosewater firmly stated R&D doesn't like the subtype and won't be using it as a standard design tool moving forward.
  • Solving the Artifact Problem: When asked if the "mandatory colorless" mana symbol introduced in Oath of the Gatewatch could have solved the issue of artifacts being too universally splashable, Rosewater shot the idea down, noting that colored mana remains a much more effective restricting tool.
  • Color Pie Echoes: Horsemanship and Shadow officially follow the exact same color pie distribution as Flying (primary in White/Blue, secondary in Black, tertiary in Red/Green).
  • Set Design & Popularity: Extended-art treatments are surprisingly more popular among Collector Booster buyers than traditional foils. Furthermore, Rosewater emphasized that he absolutely does not miss the "room to breathe" design of the old three-set block structure.
  • Behind the Curtain: Rosewater shined a light on the massive scale of modern MTG design, revealing that a single set like SOS requires over 500 credited individuals—including 21 Game Designers, 10 Play Designers, and an army of art directors and creative producers.

Hi Mark, any rules R&D has for one off creatures of a type in a set? Such as the occasional minotaur that appears every few sets

FYI, regarding the Seriema vs. Final Showdown request: adding “as long as it has this ability” doesn’t work, for the same reason the original doesn’t work (i.e., The Seriema would still be a creature even if it lost the ability). Type changes are still processed before ability changes (layer 4 vs. layer 6). The ability hasn’t been removed yet when the creature type is added. This is basically the same reason giving devoid or changeling to something doesn’t work. Adding or removing an ability cannot affect an object’s type: it’s too late. (Not to complain about layers: they work perfectly almost all the time! Corner cases are unavoidable unless we fall into Alpha-style “talk it out with your opponent and decide what makes more sense”.)

Un-Rules Q: Do Alternate Names on cards count in addition to their oracle name (if also printed on the card) for Now I Know My ABC’s? Or does only one count, and if so, which one? I thought this had been asked and answered before but couldn’t find it. Thanks

You mentioned in your DtW podcasts on your banned cards that artifact-heavy sets ran into the issue of so much of the set being playable in every deck because artifacts could be played with any colour of mana, and that come KLD you decided to make coloured artifacts a standard design tool to restrict where the splashier artifacts could be played. Do you think mandatory-colourless could have been a tool to alleviate the issues that arose with artifacts had it been in the toolbox prior to OGW?

Coalition Victory: You misspoke slightly. It requires a land of each basic land type, not a basic land of each basic land type. That means that the original dual lands (and, later, the shocklands and future cycles) work with it. A player who has access to every card would likely put all ten Limited Edition duals in their five-colour Commander deck, which makes enabling Coalition Victory that much easier, and at the time of its ban in Commander, the shocklands had also been printed, giving players two cycles of ten dual lands with basic land types, plus one of each ally-colour fetchland.

Hi, Mark. I’m someone who’s usually really hyped for previews/spoilers, upcoming sets, etc. As much as I love the big panels with announcements at MagicCons, wouldn’t it be nicer if, every two months, there were an event combining the debut of the next set with the announcement of the set coming out exactly a year later? The hype would be spread out evenly.

I’m fairly sure this has been outlined before, but I just want to double-check the limits of the questions that can be asked/answered without hitting the “now we can’t use that idea” thing the proper name of which I’ve forgotten. If someone wants to check how the rules would treat a fanmade mechanic or card, is it answerable so long as they ask vaguely about the idea, or does getting specific without giving a name to the idea still allow the question. Going back to the Fire conversation for examples, just asking about Fire as a Subtype or Supertype was okay, but if someone asked about the way things would actively interact with Fire in their hypothetical cards, would that be a step too far?

Hi, I finally started listening to Drive to work. So I might ask a lot of questions going forward. I apologize if they tread old water. (Also I understand that you can’t always answer. On episode 5 “ravnica” you cover that splitting up the guilds between 3 sets it really allowed time for each guild to shine. As a designer do you miss the ability the"room to breathe" design that the 3 block structure provided?

Howdy, Mark! I was thinking about hybrid mana the other day when looking at the hobbit set. Is it possible for a creature to one day generate hybrid mana? Like mana that could only be used as 1 of 2 colors, but would could as both for effects like Adamant, Converge, or the ECL invoke elementals.
Markrosewater · 2026-08-10
Yawgmoth’s Bargain: Greed doesn’t just cost 2 life to draw a card, it also costs one black mana. Gating it behind a mana payment brings down the power level substantially.

In the last week i gave a very deep atempt at making the best B3 massimo i could, and i found use of quite a few cool cards …BUT i can’t but feel that this commander was under tested, and for once i think he is quite undertuned
