Set News

All eyes are on Middle-earth this weekend as The Hobbit prerelease events kick off. EDHREC is diving deep into the set's Typal offerings, while MTGGoldfish is looking at the sheer scale of the legendary roster, noting that despite being a "small book/small set," players are getting a staggering 60 new commanders to parse through. Draftsim is highlighting the ultimate burglar with a comprehensive guide to building every iteration of Bilbo Baggins available in the set. For players looking to crack packs, Draftsim also ranked all 15 mythic rares from the set to help you spot the visual cues of a windmill slam bomb rare.

Commander Corner

With Bilbo, Fellow Conspirator requiring specific Food synergies to shine, EDHREC published a highly specific "Too-Specific Top 10" ranking the best "mana neutral" Food-makers to keep your pantry stocked without slowing down your mana curve. Away from the Shire, Draftsim ranked the 25 best Robot commanders for players looking to pilot big artifacts and aggressive sci-fi strategies. Meanwhile, Mark Rosewater dropped an interesting design tidbit this week: if R&D ever decides to print a noncreature card with the text "this can be your commander," they will almost certainly make it legendary first to maintain baseline rules consistency.

Competitive Scene

Following the latest Pro Tour, Quiet Speculation’s July Metagame Update highlights a sharp pivot toward combo decks in the Modern format. However, author David advises caution, predicting this combo surge is likely just a reactionary bump mirroring previous Pro Tour results rather than a permanent meta staple. For combo lovers in Standard, MTGGoldfish's "Meme or Dream?" series is testing the waters with a Hidetsugu's Second Rite kill condition—proving that if you can maneuver an opponent to exactly 10 life, you can punish them instantly. Over in the eternal formats, MTGGoldfish's Vintage 101 is busy dissecting how the new tools from The Hobbit might impact the Powered meta.

Finance & Market

The Hobbit and the newly spoiled Commander Mystery Boosters are exerting heavy influence on the secondary market. MTGStocks highlights these two products as the primary drivers in their Weekly Winners column, while Draftsim tracks the week's biggest price spikes and rounds up the 20 most expensive must-have cards from the new Tolkien sets. The most staggering finance story of the week comes from Gen Con, where a $25,000 bounty was placed on the ultra-rare, golden Smaug the Magnificent card—solidifying its status as one of the most sought-after collector's pieces in Magic's recent history.

Design & Lore

Mark Rosewater had a busy week on Blogatog, offering deep dives into R&D's philosophy and the game's underlying rules. He reflected on the mechanical overlap between artifacts and enchantments, noting that while they are fundamentally identical in the rules, "flavor is important" to keep them feeling distinct. When asked about keywording "impulse draw" effects (exiling the top card and allowing you to play it that turn), MaRo pushed back, explaining that every keyword added raises the game's comprehension complexity and barrier to entry.

Finally, for fans of set design, Rosewater shared some interesting insights into development pipelines: he revealed that he still has unused mechanics sitting in his "good idea folder" that have been waiting for the right set longer than Energy's famous 13-year incubation period.

Greetings Mr. Rosewater, I am contacting you to ask you a couple question’s about slivers, if you can answer even one, awesome. If you can’t answer my questions thank’s for reading! My first question is what does wizards plan on doing with slivers, more or less? Are slivers even discussed? If slivers are discussed, what aspects of slivers in magic do you guys discuss? Ex: More five color slivers, or more slivers in sets.

Can modern printing technology avoid the “giving Brothers Yamazaki two arts requires an extra printing sheet” problem and if so how long as that been the case?

I saw a response recently, asking about a potential keyword for “exile top card, you may play it this turn. ” And while your answer was very good, it left me curious. Wouldn’t a keyword offer additional support and flavor? Like, if we called it accelerate, then you could have something generate treasure whenever you accelerate, or it could say to put each accelerated card that wasn’t cast into your grave. I get the desire to limit the amount of keywords, but it seems like keywords help expand the space of possible designs. And for this mechanic that shows up so frequently, it would open up new build strategies.
