Happy Wednesday, planeswalkers! Gen Con is in the rearview mirror, but the spoilers and metagame shakeups are still firing on all cylinders. From format-warping new commanders in Mystery Booster to a deep dive into The Hobbit, there’s a mountain of Magic news to unpack today. Let’s get right into the top stories.

Quick Hits

  • Battle of Wits Players, Rejoice: Mystery Booster: Commander Edition has officially spoiled Whtz, the Bibliophile, a wild new Homunculus commander that actually incentivizes you to play a 1000-card deck. (Draftsim)
  • Mystery Booster Details Clarified: Mark Rosewater addressed concerns about the convention-exclusive Mystery Booster product, confirming it was funded by MagicCon but clarifying that Wizards can reprint highly demanded cards down the line if necessary. (Blogatog)
  • Archenemy is Back: The fan-favorite multiplayer format Archenemy is officially returning with the upcoming Duskmourne set, giving playgroups a fresh way to torture each other during Commander night. (Blogatog)
  • The Hobbit Hits Tabletops: With spoilers wrapping up, content creators are dropping a massive pile of set reviews, cEDH breakdowns, and draft tier lists for The Hobbit.
  • Miku Secret Lair Incoming: The Hatsune Miku Commander decks drop this Sunday, August 10th, and Wizards has confirmed the product is print-to-demand with a tight 48-hour ordering window. (Reddit)

Set News

Gen Con attendees got their hands on Mystery Booster: Commander Edition, a product that introduces 60 brand-new, tournament-legal commanders alongside a suite of highly anticipated reprints. (EDHREC, Draftsim)

Because the product is currently restricted to MagicCons, some players have drawn unfavorable comparisons to the infamous, exclusivity-plagued 1994 Nalathni Dragon promo. Mark Rosewater pushed back on this, stating that giving away a card at a non-Magic event is entirely different from a product designed specifically for Wizards' own convention circuit. He also clarified that while the set only exists because MagicCon budgeted for it, they can reprint cards if players demand it or if something needs a ban. (Blogatog, Blogatog)

Meanwhile, if you're looking to pick up the Hatsune Miku Secret Lair Commander deck, you'll need to be at your computer this weekend. The deck is print-to-demand, but orders are strictly limited to a window between Monday, August 10, 9 a.m. PT and Tuesday, August 11, 8:59 a.m. PT. (Reddit, EDHREC)

Commander Corner

The biggest windmill slam of the day goes to Whtz, the Bibliophile, which finally makes "cards that care about deck size" a viable strategy by allowing you to run a 1000-card Commander deck. If you've been trying to make Battle of Wits work in the command zone since 2018, your time has come. (Draftsim, Blogatog)

Over in Middle-earth, The Hobbit spoilers are wrapping up, giving us 63 new legendary creatures to brew with. EDHREC has a deep dive into the "fun factor" of the new Hobbit commanders, as well as a look at the set's best new combo pieces like Bard, King of Dale, ranked using Commander Spellbook data. (EDHREC, EDHREC)

If you're looking to optimize your lists, the cEDH set review for The Hobbit is live, analyzing if anything can match the earth-shattering impact of Tales of Middle-earth staples like Orcish Bowmasters and Delighted Halfling. Red/white equipment decks also got some new toys to play with, as The Hobbit introduces Hone counters—read Draftsim's guide to see if cards like Sting, the Glinting Dagger make the cut. (EDHREC, Draftsim)

Finally, for the rules nerds: there's an active debate swirling around how overwrite effects like Kudo interact with +1/+1 counters, as well as some complex legend-rule cloning scenarios involving Uugguu. (Reddit, Reddit)

Limited & Draft

The Hobbit is nearly upon us, and Limited players are dissecting the format. A comprehensive draft guide and tier list has hit Reddit, praising the set's flavor and examining whether the dwarf-heavy red/white archetypes will be balanced. If you're trying to find the signals at your prerelease, Draftsim has you covered with a breakdown of the best commons and uncommons by color to help you navigate your early picks. (Reddit, Draftsim)

In broader Limited news, Mark Rosewater polled players on what they'd like to see changed about Play Boosters, provided the tweaks wouldn't negatively impact Limited balance. (Blogatog)

Competitive Scene

MTGGoldfish's "Best Standard Deck Ever" tournament continues, pitting iconic Standard boogeymen against each other. In the Top 64, we have a clash of eras as the blistering Kithkin white weenie deck from 2008 takes on the universally loathed, infinite-turn looping Simic Nexus from 2019. (MTGGoldfish)

Design & Lore

Mystery Booster 2 isn't just bringing wild mechanics—it's delivering some deep-cut lore. The beautifully illustrated Selenia, the Cursed Heart caught the eye of a classic era player, and Rosewater revealed that the card's art actually originates from an old 90s Vanguard product. This has fueled hope for more Weatherlight Saga callbacks, which Rosewater echoed excitement for. (Blogatog, Blogatog)

Looking to the future of the Multiverse, the spoiler of Chandler and Joven has players asking if we’re finally heading back to Ulgrotha. While Rosewater didn't confirm a return to the Homelands plane, he did reassure players that the poor performance of The Brothers' War hasn't ruined our chances of returning to Dominaria, noting we'll likely see a modern-day revisit eventually. (Blogatog, Blogatog)

Lastly, for a touch of rules design philosophy: Rosewater explained why ability words like Heroic can't be used to shorthand or abbreviate rules text, as they merely serve as flavorful labels for actual mechanics rather than functional keyword replacements. (Blogatog)

If you could go back, would you have made Black Purple instead? Black is already represented as purple in a lot of products, obviously due to a black or grey symbol on a black background causing issues. Would you have made it purple if you could change it?

Hey, Mark- I just wanted to stop in with my thanks to you, Gavin and all the rest for bringing Archenemy back with Duskmourne. I spent Commander night at the LGS playtesting Villainous Affinity- a Davros, Dalek Creator deck I built specifically for Commander Archenemy. It was a smash hit, despite being a bit overtuned (Did you know Black, Red, and Blue can kill like, a *lot* of creatures?) Please keep making and bringing back fun alternate Magic modes like Planechase, Conspiracy and Archenemy. They really do have their fans.

Regarding your new article this week, My Entry into Fantasy, excellent article and it is very relatable both in terms of it being my draw into fantasy as well as the kismet alluded to at the end of your article. Of course, the most important potential impact of not having read The Hobbit is that you most likely would have not had the pleasure of meeting your future wife at WoTC. I have a similar situation in which I may have never met my wife of 26+ years had my grade 12 drama teacher not recommended me to audition for a community theatre production. Thinking of everything that had to fall into place just so in order to have everything you hold so dear is a fascinating exercise which I find helps to keep a positive perspective and to prevent regrets. Thanks for once again opening up so willingly.
