MaRo opened the floor to the community to share their thoughts on how these premium treatments affect the game's visual identity and reprint equity.
  • In other product news, Draftsim has a breakdown of everything we know about the MTG Foundations Commander decks. These products are set to be massive entry points for newer players and could feature some much-needed reprints for the secondary market.

Design & Lore — Rosewater insights, story beats, worldbuilding, flavor deep dives

  • Mark Rosewater fielded a ton of design questions on Blogatog this week. He explained why UB sets tend to feature characters from all eras (like Kirk to Boimler in Star Trek) rather than focusing on a specific timeline—mostly because most properties only get one set, so they try to maximize fan service.
  • Speaking of Marvel, MaRo revealed that Mjölnir originally used the text "equip worthy" before the design team opted to formalize "Worthy" as a batch mechanic. He also noted that despite the set's theme, there were no explorations into Two-Headed Giant mechanics.
  • Finally, a fascinating piece of Magic history surfaced on Reddit: original design guidelines for set designers from 1993, posted by legendary early collector Keith Adams. It's an incredible deep dive into the early philosophy of the game!

What are the chances that “the biggest bear ever” is not referring to stats, but rather a card that is folded several times to fit in a pack, and when unfolded is the size of a movie poster?

Going to have to agree that the cards with famous actors faces on them are really off-putting. I dislike Universes Beyond in general but that stuff is egregious to me. Also being told to just not put them in my deck doesn’t seem like a good solution personally. Especially when you reprint a very popular and powerful card with a treatment like that. I’m not asking you to remove all Universes Beyond from the game or never do that treatment again, but getting a really long response that boils down to “you are in the vast minority, other people like this, we will continue to do things you strongly dislike, sorry” doesn’t really feel great on the receiving end. The ideal response from my perspective would be a simple “Alright, we hear you, anybody else feel this way?” because I think at this point people expressing their dislike of Universes Beyond knows that it is super popular and that you’ll keep doing it. They just want to let you know they don’t like it because it feels like nobody at Wizards of the Coast is listening or cares.

Setting aside how overpowered, possibly broken, such cards have the potential to be, which card types (or supertypes) would best fit black and red equivalents to Tolarian Academy, Gaea’s Cradle and Serra’s Sanctum (instead of the lands that actually completed that cycle in Urza’s Saga)?

What have you learned about Mood Swings now that it’s been in players’ hands for a little while? Any big surprises?

Hello Mark. Been playing MtG now for 31 years and I just want to say how much I appreciate this blog. You have helped make a game beloved by millions and I hope you are proud. I guess I should ask a question, are we likely to find out what happened to Thalia and Gitrog? Whether you respond or not, I hope you have a wonderful day.

I did a double take when the ad for Mood Swings here on Blogatog got replaced by the Hobbit preview. Had to check to make sure it was still for sale!

Will we hear more about Reality Fracture during/after the con this weekend? :3

Hey Mark, I think it might be helpful to remind people about the existence of the Planar Standard and Premodern formats, two fan made formats with growing communities that don’t allow any UB cards. If people are truly looking for ways to play Magic completely free from UB, there are communities you can join.

I wonder with UB, why it seems the choice is always to “go for everything” rather than picking a story or era in the property to focus on. To explain another way, why do you decide to do a “Star Trek” set with everyone from Kirk to Boimler, instead of maybe just doing a “Star Trek: TOS” set and saving eras for future UBs. (Which kinda seems like halfway what is happening with Marvel)

is it possible to print a card that prevents players from searching for a specific card type? or is it all or nothing?

There appears to be a typo in one of your teasers: “{T}, Add {C} for each Halfling you control.” Can you confirm there’s really a comma after the tap symbol? I expect that’s actually a colon.

Was using flavor word ever considered for Mjölnir instead of inventing the Worthy batch as a rule word?

Hi Mark! While I do need to put myself in the count of UB dislikers. I wanna thank you for spending the time to respond so thoroughly and thoughtfully to everyone’s concerns, combined you’ve basically written a whole article.
Markrosewater · 2026-07-16
I’ll be honest, if you announced that the plan was 2 or 3 UB sets a year depending on how well you felt about the third best property you got your hands on I’d much prefer that to 3 sets as the hard baseline
