Design & Lore — Rosewater insights, story beats, worldbuilding, flavor deep dives

  • Historical Universes Beyond? A fan recently pitched the idea of a Universes Beyond set featuring real-life historical figures from before 1200 CE, similar to the Assassin's Creed set. Mark Rosewater confirmed they've talked about it, but noted the ultimate decider would be whether there's enough player demand for a history-themed set. Read the discussion.

  • Two-Line Typelines? With Magic's creature types getting increasingly complex and crowded, someone asked if we'd ever see a two-line typeline. Of all the colours, is Black the worst romantic partner? Or would you say all five colours are equally able to be good romantic partners in their own ways? Thanks!

Something I really like about magic is how the designs of cards change over time, effects that once were commonplace become discontinued, and overall styles of design change over time. It really makes older sets feel special.

What was more popular, draft boosters or set boosters?

Hey Mark! My gf and I just played Mood Swings for the first time! It was a ton of fun I’m looking forward to future games! 😁

hi mark! I see you on my fyp all the time, and was wondering why you were there. then I looked and you are a card man. I do not play any cards but it’s fun to see what the card people are up to. I don’t have a card related question, but what’s your favorite potato dish?

Adding “Instant” to the type line might make that space even more crowded. Would it be more economical to use “Flash” on all card types instead?

Another birthday around here. This time, can I get some piece of trivia on Akroma, or Angels in general?
Markrosewater · 2026-07-13
Mark! I finally got to play Mood Swings last night! Played with two friends who also play Magic, so some of the learning curve was helped by that. Some highlights include: trying to figure out who felt abstract emotions most recently; each of us winning at least one match; & personally there was one point where I got Hope, Fascination, Serenity, and Wonder (naming Green) all out by the second round, so I proceeded to win 2 rounds in a row, only for my friend McKennan to play Contempt, leaving me with no Moods and no cards in hand (until I drew for losing the round/also getting hurt feelings). My only notes are that (and this may have just been the packs that I had) it seemed a bit complex, so much so that my friends who don’t play Magic (and were also drinking wine) decided to just watch. Also, (and I know that it’s in first-edition) the Gray color didn’t immediately communicate “White” at first. But otherwise, it was extremely fun! I’m definitely gonna try to get some more packs to hopefully have even more variety.

Do you think MAT would have been better received if it had been sold as a fixed-contents boxed set (whether one with all fifty cards, or several each with a defined subset)? It was already not intended for Limited play, after all. I can appreciate, of course, why Wizards would have chosen not to sell it that way, but I suspect it would have been received better by the player base.

I met up with a friend at a board game bar. I brought Mood Swings, figured we’d do some of that, some of the games that were on hand. We ended up just playing a lot of Mood Swings—he loved it! He’s not a Magic player but may pick up his own copy now.
