MTG Digest.

Marvel Super Heroes Impressions, Doctor Doom Brews, and Legacy Vroom-Vroom

Set News

  • MagicCon Amsterdam Prep: The Archidekt Artist Finder is back for MagicCon Amsterdam, making it easier than ever to track down your favorite card illustrators for those sweet, sweet alters.
  • Early Marvel Super Heroes Impressions: Now that we're a week and some change into the Marvel Super Heroes release, the community consensus is surprisingly positive following prerelease weekend. If you're ready to spam superheroes, EDHREC kicked off a two-part series predicting the over/under popularity of the new MSH commanders.

Commander Corner

  • Brewing with the Big Bads: Looking to connive in some villainy? MTGStocks highlights some incredibly unique and under-the-radar tech for building Doctor Doom, King of Latveria.
  • Off-Beat Commanders: Tired of the same old commanders? Draftsim breaks down how Sivitri, Dragon Master puts a wild Dimir twist on typical Dragon tribal EDH decks. Meanwhile, EDHREC is breaking the time stream with Powerful Paradoxes for Karolina Dean, Runaway.
  • A Cautionary Tale: Before you sleeve up your next masterwork, take a humbling journey through this Reddit thread about a player who built their dream Commander deck, only to find out it was absolute trash on the battlefield.

Competitive Scene

  • Vroom Vroom in Legacy: Cars are somehow making a splash in older formats! Joe Dyer covers the newest vehicular developments keeping Legacy engines running smoothly.
  • European Legacy Masters: Get your twin-tempo streams ready. The Eternal Mania and European Legacy Masters Finals are kicking off this weekend, and it’s going to be a premier showcase of high-level Eternal play.

Limited & Draft

  • Your MSH Draft Cheat Sheet: If you're looking to windmill slam some superheroes at your local LGS, Draftsim has you covered with the Ultimate Guide to Marvel Super Heroes Draft.
  • The Death of "Small Sets": Mark Rosefield tackled questions on why R&D is experimenting with smaller sets again (like Spider-Man and TMNT). He noted that the March of the Machine: Aftermath disaster taught them that players only tolerate small sets if they are still fully designed for a cohesive Limited environment.

Finance & Market

  • Marvel Prices in Stasis: If you've been trying to buy specific singles for your MSH Commander decks, you might notice prices are frozen. Supply chain delays for Marvel Super Heroes have put the secondary market in a weird holding pattern.
  • Black Mythics Breaking the Bank: It’s not often a card holds triple-digit value, but Draftsim highlights two recent black mythics that have officially breached the elusive $100 mark.
  • Incoming Reprints: If you've been holding off on buying a $50 green finisher, your patience is about to pay off. Finale of Devastation is slated to receive two separate Secret Lair reprints before the year ends.

Design & Lore

  • Edge of Eternities in Standard?: Don't hold your breath on seeing those wildly powerful Edge of Eternities Commander cards in Standard anytime soon. MaRo confirmed the chances of them being made Standard-legal are "low."
  • White's Counterspell Design Space: Asked if R&D would finally print a true color-shifted Memory Lapse for white today, Rosewater admitted they thought it was too good for the color back during Planar Chaos, and his gut says that opinion hasn't changed.
  • Legendary Spells: Enjoy casting legendary instants and sorceries? Sadly, Mark noted they weren't well-liked mechanically, making a return in a set filled with legendaries (like MSH) highly unlikely.

Setting aside concerns about the Reserved List, whether it’s a good use of resources, or whether anyone would buy it even if it could be printed, if you could take one old non-core set and redo all the cards to preserve the original intent but bring them in line with modern design philosophy, power level, Limited environments, templating, colour pie, story callouts, and so on, which set would you most want to do this for?

I just listened to your interview with Jess! Something I’d love to hear expounded on: He briefly mentioned that the game doesn’t go back and re-check a previous layer when a layer later touches it – why not? At first blush, it seems like it would alleviate all of the unintuitiveness issues that squeak through the cracks. Infinite loops, maybe?

Is there going to be a Magic one at SDCC this year?

Hi Mark. Today I became the new owner of this 1996 Visions hat and just wanted to share a piece of Magic history with you. My two questions regarding it are 1. Did you see this hat at all back in the day? And 2. Where was something like this available at the time? Was it something only given to Wizards employees? Or was it available at events? Combination of both? Thanks for any info and hope you’re having a great Wednesday :)

I want to make sure I understand terminology: a bend is when a color does something it normally doesn’t do, a break is when that something undermines a core weakness of the color. But you’ve also said in the past that faithless looting a break. I know looting is something red doesn’t get, but it doesn’t seem like it’s undercutting a weakness the way something like “naturalize but it’s red” would be.

Earlier today you said Lapse of Certainty was originally a color shifted Memory Lapse and the additional one generic mana was added later. Would you make a true color shifted Memory Lapse, including mana value, today? What are the current design requirements for white counter spells?

I know you can’t say anything about the the future, but will at least one card be printed in 2029?

So I found original Ixalan kinda lacking in an overall theme, but had a bunch of cool ideas. Lost caverns of ixalan did a really cool job of adding u derground themes as part of it, but is usually described as a backdrop set, which to me means the underground isnt considered central to ixalan. Would you say Ixalans overall theme is more of a lost world archetype? (Orazca, the underground realm… perhaps an Atlantis parallel on the next visit?)

is there a drive to work episode on dual lands and their evolution? Curious why most of the duals were really bad until like ravnica and onwards.

Could we return to the time period of return to ravnica?

I seem to remember that the original Invasion taplands were hugely controversial within R&D at the time regarding whether they were too good to print, with the consensus being that in a multicolor set it was okay to push them a little — cards that Wizards now prints strictly better versions of at common in almost every set.

Mark, in Mood Swings, if I play a Curiosity copy of my opponent’s Joy, and then they go first and play two moods on their next turn bringing them to three moods vs my one mood, if I then play Pride as my first mood for the turn do I get to play another mood to match their three before playing my additional mood from my Joy copy?

You’ve said that both small sets and returning to a plane too quickly were problems the block model had. Is there a reason that we still have both of these things individually? SPM and TMT are comparable to small sets (other than being designed to work on their own in limited), and SPM and MSH are returns to the same world/IP less than a year apart from one another.

mark why did you do this
Markrosewater · 2026-07-09
Do you think Legendary Instants/Sorceries could return in a set with as many Legendary Creatures as MSH? Or is it just too weird a design space?
