Ranking 362 Marvel Commanders, Pioneer's Decline, and Windmill-Slamming Innistrad Remastered

Set News — spoilers, previews, announcements, bans, upcoming releases

  • MagicCon Amsterdam Preview Panels: With MagicCon Amsterdam on the horizon, players are eagerly asking if the upcoming preview panels will be livestreamed. Mark Rosewater weighed in, noting that while he isn't sure of the broadcast details yet, the local time zone isn't doing the global audience any favors.
  • Mood Swings Hits Doorsteps: Rosewater's new non-MTG card game, Mood Swings, is arriving in players' hands, prompting plenty of rules clarifications and first impressions. MaRo expressed immense excitement that the game is finally out, noting that the highly praised Duplicity card is "super fun (although quite strong)."
  • Nostalgia Trip with The Duelist: For the Magic historians out there, MaRo took a trip down memory lane to discuss The Duelist magazine. He confirmed it was an officially licensed WotC publication where he served as editor-in-chief and wrote extensively before the digital era took over.

Commander Corner — EDH highlights, new commanders, precon reviews, cEDH updates

Competitive Scene — tournament results, meta shifts, tier list changes, deck techs

  • The Decline of Pioneer: Pioneer was once touted as WotC's premier non-rotating format, but MTGZone has published a stark piece on how the format seemingly vanished from the competitive spotlight, alongside potential fixes to revive it.
  • Best Standard Deck Ever: MTGGoldfish continues their ultimate Standard tournament with a clash of titans: 2015's 4C Rally against 2022's Esper Raffine. It's a battle of the $100 Standard boogeymen, pitting Jace, Vryn's Prodigy against Sheoldred, the Apocalypse.
  • Modern Eggs Deck Tech: Looking to combo off in Modern? An intrepid Reddit brewer has updated their Modern Eggs list featuring Culling Ritual, complete with a full primer and sideboard guide.

Limited & Draft — draft guides, set reviews, pick tips, cube updates

  • Innistrad Remastered is the Truth: If you missed the original Innistrad draft format back in the day, the remastered version is living up to the hype. Players are raving about the format, calling it an absolute ruleset for how to build a deeply strategic and rewarding Limited environment.
  • Building a Set Cube: With so many sets releasing, a returning player recently asked the community for the most replayable recent sets to build a dedicated draft cube. If you're looking to convert a booster box into endless limited cycles, the thread is packed with great community recommendations.

Finance & Market — price spikes, reprint news, buy/sell targets, Reserved List updates

  • Magic's Attention Economy: MTGStocks has a fascinating new piece analyzing how Magic's incredibly crowded release calendar is actively warping MTG finance. With player attention fractured across Universes Beyond, supplemental sets, and mainline releases, cards are spiking and crashing faster than ever.
  • Budget Marvel Staples: You don't need to break the bank to upgrade your new Marvel decks. EDHREC has compiled the best commons and uncommons from Marvel Super Heroes, highlighting high-synergy role players like Political Triumph and H.E.R.B.I.E. Scout Unit that are flying under the radar.

Design & Lore — Rosewater insights, story beats, worldbuilding, flavor deep dives

  • The Philosophy of Discard: A relatively new player asked Mark Rosewater why targeted discard like Thoughtseize is such an uncontroversial staple in MTG compared to other TCGs where hand disruption is heavily stigmatized. MaRo noted that while it's firmly in Black's slice of the color pie, it works best in small, carefully measured doses.
  • Will the Original Lorwyn 5 Return? With planeswalker power creep at an all-time high, fans have been wondering if the original Lorwyn 5 (like Garruk Wildspeaker) could ever return to Standard. MaRo believes it's possible one day, though we're more likely to see the characters themselves with fresh designs rather than the exact original cards.
  • Un-Sets and Worldbuilding: When asked if a future Un-set could parody an existing plane (like "Unnistrad"), Rosewater noted that while funny, he is far more excited to design brand new worlds that still allow for mechanical parody without being chained to an existing plane's lore constraints.

How likely are the original Lorwyn 5 to ever return to Standard? Garruk in particular is such a nice and clean design, I’d love to play him again, but the power bar for planeswalkers in other formats is just so high.

My Mood Swings pack arrived today! Pros: I got Duplicity! Cons: I got all but ONE of the Vanilla Moods (I am missing the White one) and it did make me slightly sad :( Very excited to play this with family and friends, and I hope a 2nd edition or expansion comes sooner than later!

Could the Blogatog FAQ get an update sometime? The “short list” of possible worlds still includes a lot of worlds that have since happened or partially happened, and the recommended R&D Tumblr links seem pretty out of date. I’d love to see what the current version of that list looks like.

With the cancellation of the Mood Swings Event at Magic Con Las Vegas, it was mentioned in the email that we would receive a copy when the product did arrive after the con. What ever happened to that? I tried email the event organizers/newsletter with no response.

What a great night, was able to play two 4 player games of Mood Swings, five 3 player games and ten 2 player games with a few of my kids, excellent Fathers Day. We kept swapping between our five decks and it was incredible how different the five decks played. Some decks had overflowing discard piles while others typically had hands waiting for a single card to be discarded as everyone raced to benefit from the rare occurrence. Some decks seemed to keep tableaus to a minimum with 2-3 cards the norm whilst others resulted in massive board states with multiple players having more than 8 cards in play. The most interesting part was how everyone appreciated a different deck’s play style over another. With the evening concluded I decided to combine the five decks into one large deck of 119 unique cards (I have already completed a cross-country trade and am awaiting 2 cards in return to bring my total to 121) and will see how this plays throughout the week. Cannot stop raving about this game!!! Thanks again Mark :-)

As a rare take: I do not like Mood Swings, but I am a commander player, part of what I like about Magic is the more social element and the longer games; and Mood Swings starts and ends really fast. I do think it would appeal to fans of other constructed formats, but I figured Id share my personal take though (Congrats on the release though, very happy for you and glad most people like it!)

On Mood Swings, we got a game with a person who is not interested in playing Magic (but likes lots of other games). They liked it pretty well but had some critical feedback about the design I wanted to share. They thought it was odd that the game uses the 5 Magic colors, since moods feel like they could be a lot more than 5 colors, and only a few cards mechanically care about the colors. They would have liked the cards to be more colorful in general. (I realize that part of the low visual allure is because this is being marketed as a prototype.) Because so much of the game is derived from Magic, and because many of the card abilities are templated similarly to Magic, the game felt a little bit more “for Magic players” than “for everyone.” Maybe this would fade after playing a few times and getting more used to what each card does. Something else we have all noticed in the couple games we have played is that when Sadness comes out, the game becomes all about whether someone can answer Sadness. I’m not sure if there are other cards with oversized effects like this, but it’s on our watch list.

Hi Mark! As things that you’ve waited a long time for, which was more exciting for you - getting to design a Marvel set, or having Mood Swings published?
Markrosewater · 2026-06-23
Hi Mark, I loved strixhaven, but paradigm was a terrible experience. You could he playing a tight, exciting game for 20 minutes, the. someone plays any paradigm card besides the white one, and you were sentenced to 10 minutes of pointless play where you were doomed to lose. It was just not fun. Am I an outlier or did people actually enjoy it? Our play group nerfed them by saying they only came back once, and they were still great but at least palatable.

Hi Mark, I have a Mood Swings Question. The card Imagination says “All moods are the chosen color”. Does this only apply to moods that were in play when Imagination entered, or are future moods also affected?
Markrosewater · 2026-06-23
Loving mood swings! A lot of back and forth excitement in a short game. Two critiques 1) I don’t love the art…would appreciate color and a clearer tie to emotion. 2) for my non-mtg partner, the cards felt like they were written in magic-ese and were hard to parse. Especially while learning the game rules at the same time. It can be hard to get quickly main ideas like “This starts big and shrinks” when you’re not a person who’s read thousands of trading cards :)

If you made another version of Lin Sivvi, do you think it would be spelled that way, as on her original card, or as “Liin Sivi” as it was in the Masques block novels?

Wouldn’t you say Love being a Mythic Rare and Hate being common *is* commentary, in that Hate might be a common thing that can be overcome, but Love is arguably the greatest power there is, and recontextualizes everything around itself by existing? ;)

If you guys ever do white borders again, can you do them on the retro border? I finally got my hands on some of the Mystery Booster 2 white borders, and they just don’t look as good on the current frame as they do on the old frame.

hey mark! any chance of a return of the snow type any time soon? I’m a big fan of it flavour wise and would love to play more of it

Hey! I play a lot of TCGs and moved to MTG as my main one when Foundations came out. Something that surprised me about Magic was that hand knowledge and forced discards are an uncontroversial part of the game design, being fully embedded into black’s space in the colour pie. In every other game I play, hand-knowledge and discard effects are almost entirely taboo, with extremely high opportunity cost to access if they’re even possible at all. What is it about MTG specifically that makes these effects uncontroversial to design for? Is it the relative abundance of card draw, the lands system implying a legitimate tempo loss from the decision to force a discard - or something else? Thanks! MTG has been a blast to really get stuck into, however salty a thoughtseize may make me!
