Marvel Super Heroes Takes Over Magic: cEDH Breakdowns, Modern Ban Shakeups, and Ranking 362 New Commanders!

Set News — spoilers, previews, announcements, bans, upcoming releases

  • Modern Post-Ban Winners: With Phlage and Lotus Field finally getting the axe, MTGStocks breaks down the new cards picking up meta share in Modern. If you're looking to re-tool your decklists, now is the time to snag these sleepers before they spike.
  • Secret Invasion Color Pie Check: A player recently asked MaRo if the "Banishing Light" effect on Secret Invasion—which exiles a creature without allowing recast—was a massive blue color pie break. MaRo clarified that you should think of it mechanically like a Control Magic, keeping it well within blue's domain.
  • Arena Shakeup: DraftSim breaks down massive changes coming to MTG Arena and the Arena Championship pipeline. It's a mixed bag of the good, the bad, and the ugly for digital grinders.

  • Fetchlands in Standard?: Don't hold your breath for enemy fetchlands to anchor a Standard set anytime soon. When asked if they could be printed into Standard and pre-banned for accessibility, MaRo firmly stated "If. That’s not how we’d do it." and confirmed they currently don't want them in Standard at all.
  • MSH Set Reviews & Specs: As spoilers wrap up, players are rushing to evaluate the financial impact of the set. DraftSim has ranked The 16 Best Green Cards in MSH (Hulk is looking like a major chase mythic) alongside a list of 3 great deals you can find right now.
  • Overrated Staples: DraftSim also published a ranking of the 20 Most Overrated Commander Cards. If you're looking to trim overplayed, overpriced cardboard from your trade binder, this is required reading.

Design & Lore — Rosewater insights, story beats, worldbuilding, flavor deep dives

  • No Retroactive Batches: Sorry, flavor fans—Wizards will not be adding "Villain" to the Outlaw batch. MaRo confirmed that R&D has thus far never retroactively changed creature type batches after the fact.
  • Original Kamigawa Flaws: When asked why the original Kamigawa block was considered a low point in Magic design, MaRo cited the block being "very parasitic and ham-fisted."
  • Strixhaven Secrets: Magecraft was strangely absent from Secrets of Strixhaven, and MaRo revealed that Set Design chopped up the Vision Design mechanic to turn it into faction keywords instead.
  • MTG in Pop Culture: Keep an eye out for a nod to our favorite game in the new Netflix movie Voicemails for Isabelle. MaRo shared a fan tip that a character has a sweet story about how Magic connects him to his mother.

I’d like to add my Mood Swings experience to the pile: My wife and daughter both just played as a team against me. They both don’t like playing games with me since I tend to get competitive, but they both really enjoyed beating me. Looking forward to more game nights with it! Also, do Validation, Fear, and Fickleness allow you to play all of your moods repeatedly, assuming that the most common mood color is Blue? If so, that’s ridiculously cool.

Mark, why do you consider the original Kawigama Block a low point in Magic Design?

Hey, Mark! I just received my Mood Swings deck (my mythics are Chaos and Guile) and I’m enjoying it a lot, but both of my mythics have led to the same rules question: If Chaos has redistributed the Moods in play or Guile has stolen a Mood and another Mood’s effect tells you to return a Mood “to their player’s hand,” does the Mood go to it’s original player’s hands or to the hand of its current controller?

who are you?

How big of a bend is Secret Invasion? The sort of “Banishing Light” effect seems to stay in line with blue having trouble permanently removing creatures, but it causing the creature to leave the battlefield without the opponent being able to recast it seems like a pretty big jump from blue’s normal removal suite. Is this something we could see more of, or just a one time experiment for flavor?

How do you deal with card effects that would be worth half mana? For example if an effect would be too expensive at 3 mana but kind of too cheap at 2 mana?

Magic in culture alert. In the new Netflix movie Voicemails for Isabelle, one of the characters has a sweet story about how Magic connects him to his mother. I recommend it.

I’m guessing the answer is no, but is there any chance of a future mechanic which can retrieve exiled creatures? Not that it’s something the game necessarily should have, but I’m curious if exiles mechanical role as “this is Gone Now” would ever be played with. (that said I really enjoy mechanics that play with exile in interesting ways like Altair from the Assassin’s Creed ub set, I think that’s so fun)

If or when - Fetchlands reprinted into a Standard set, but pre-banned in Standard and Pioneer (if enemy, which aren’t currently in the cardpool)? I.e. reprinting them purely for accessibility’s sake.
