Design & Lore

  • Batching and Keywords: Mark Rosewater shut down the idea of retroactively adding "Villain" to the Outlaw batch, reminding players that WotC doesn't change established keyword batches after the fact. He also touched on the concept of a constructed-focused "vanilla matters" vertical cycle. (https://markrosewater.tumblr.com/post/819708875370528768)
  • Mood Swings Drafting: For those curious about the upcoming supplemental sets, MaRo revealed that the "Mood Swings" concept drafts incredibly well and mostly maps cleanly onto the traditional Magic color pie. (https://markrosewater.tumblr.com/post/819722011121188864)
  • Worldbuilding vs. Rosters: The community is debating a hot topic: why do "world-building" sets resonate so differently than "character roster" sets like Marvel? The discussion offers some great insight into MTG set design philosophy. (https://www.reddit.com/r/magicTCG/comments/1u7rl7j/thoughts_on_world_building_sets_vs_character/)

I’m catching up on some past articles and loved reading about the history of Mood Swings. I so hope you find a way to get copies of Anxiety with your face out there as bonus cards, I was not expecting that and it’s awesome.

I have really enjoyed Mood Swings so far. Every game I have played with my partner has ended with us within one point of each other. Except the one game where she had 4 moods and I got to Bliss trigger on Envy :)

Super Hero Civil War (in draft) is probably the best card in the set. If you see it splash it, maybe even double splash it.

Hey Mark! I’ve always loved food tokens as a mechanic, but do you forsee it ever coming back as a major player in another set? (ie. The Eldraine sets, Lord of The Rings, Bloomburrow)

Hey Mark, I got a Mood Swings question. With chaos where you randomly redistribute moods, it says they don’t do “after playing this mood” effects again. Does that mean the moods remember things from when they were played? For example, if you had revealed a card to get the higher value or which mood it was suppressing? I assume so but wanted clarification. Been enjoying the game and am excited to bring it to my family’s Father’s Day get-together!

I feel like the game would be healthier if treasures couldn’t be used for mana fixing, and we’re instead somehow linked to the color of the card that created them.
