Design & Lore — Rosewater insights, story beats, worldbuilding, flavor deep dives

  • In a fascinating piece of trivia, Mark Rosewater revealed that Outlaws of Thunder Junction was originally conceived as a "Villains" themed set before pivoting to a Western setting.
  • For the Vorthos players out there, MaRo dropped some fun lore regarding the original Innistrad: Trepanation Blade was originally designed by Richard Garfield as "Chainsaw."
  • Color pie enthusiasts take note: Armageddon is still technically within White's slice of the color pie, but R&D has no desire to print that effect again.
  • MaRo ranked the early sets of Magic, controversially placing Fallen Empires above The Dark—though he did admit he missed Legends in his initial list.

Un-set ruling question. If I have two City of Brass, can I cast Paradox Surveyor? (Paradox Surveyor’s mana cost is G, G/U, U). IE, can a half green and a half blue combine to become a split G/U mana?

RE: using flicker because the first card that used it was called “flicker” So! I looked it up and turns out the set it came from (Urza’s) was during the period where my playgroup had stopped playing mtg! (We stopped around tempest - all went to university - got back around onslaught) which explains why it was called “sliding” and not flicker! We’d not played with flicker! Also, I wonder if another reason flicker stuck around and blinking was more specific was because of blinking spirit from ice age which was this impossible to remove thing on kitchen tables. Magic vernacular is a weird twisty road of memories :)

I don’t know if I’m the odd one out, but I really enjoyed the 3 year look ahead. I got multiple people into magic earlier than they would have due to it. Additionally got 2 people back into magic with it.

The belief that Chroma had potential with some refining led, famously, to Devotion. Are there any mechanics with a lukewarm first outing that stick out in your mind as ripe for a redux? I’d love to hear examples, but a yes + emoji is also acceptable if close to the vest.

if or when new lands that tap for 2 or more mana?
Markrosewater · 2026-05-24
do you know WHY people didn’t enjoy the 3 year look-ahead? I personally didn’t like getting so much info and names of sets, but very much enjoyed very oblique teasers, like a couple of pieces of art.
