Witherbloom Breaks the Bank While MagicCon Las Vegas Shatters Records

  • If pests are more your vibe, EDHREC has you covered with a deep dive into building around the stinky new legend, Blech, Loafing Pest. Source

Finance & Market

  • Wurmcalling has seen a sudden price spike thanks to Witherbloom synergy. Players are scrambling for this flexible mana sink to pair with the Balancer. Source
  • One player got a shock when they cracked a Lorwyn Eclipsed precon and found a Pokémon misprint inside the pack. This wild crossover error card is already fetching a premium. Source
  • MTGStocks recaps the financial impact of MagicCon and highlights potential buy targets based on the recent spoiler season. Source

Design & Lore

  • The debate is settled: Augury Adept is officially a color pie break because Blue shouldn't be gaining life. Rosewater confirmed this stance on his blog, putting years of arguments to rest. Source
  • Reality Fracture is treading similar ground to Planar Chaos, but focusing on flavor "what-ifs" rather than bending the color pie. Source
  • Don't hold your breath for a return to Ikoria. While the plane is likely, MaRo expressed low confidence that the complex Mutate mechanic would ever come back. Source
  • Wizards of the Coast confirmed that they actively seek feedback from lapsed players through targeted surveys to understand why players leave the game. Source

Personally I absolutely loved Ikoria and the mutate mechanic for its complexity and niche interactions. Is there any chance that a return is on the horizon in 2027 for both of these?

I wanted to thank you and everyone at MTG for not backing down your support for the LGBTQ+ community. In a time many companies are rolling back support for my community, MTG continues to make and center LGBTQ+ characters. As a queer person it genuinely makes me feel safer to be a part of this community. 🤍💙🖤♥️💚 🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍⚧️

Hi Mark, can I request an old border abazan legend? There is currently no abazan legendary creature thats ever been printed in the old border thanks!
Markrosewater · 2026-05-15
Hi Mark! I’m invoking the rite of birthday trivia to ask about my favorite character: Adeline. Thanks for everything you’re doing for Magic.
Markrosewater · 2026-05-15
Hey Mark! Where is Threshold currently on the Storm Scale?
Markrosewater · 2026-05-15
reblogged two back-to-back rosewater takes today, you’re on a roll… actual ask: Do you have advice for someone getting back into magic after 5+ years?
Markrosewater · 2026-05-15
Are there any sets that you wouldn’t change a thing if you released them again?
Markrosewater · 2026-05-15
Inspired by this week’s Resleevables, I got thinking about Werebear. It’s a classic card from Odyssey that feels like it has great feel - is it a card that we’d likely not see again in standard, if Threshold is something you do a lot?
Markrosewater · 2026-05-15
Canonically, Hell is a plane in Magic. Some of the cards that refer to it may be be speaking figuratively, though.

When Shadowmoor released I recall a series of articles about the extent to which hybrid violates the colour pie, in the style of a trial, with particular focus on Augury Adept. What is the current view of R&D on whether Augury Adept was a colour-pie break?
Markrosewater · 2026-05-15
Hi Mark! Edge of Eternities was about 9 months ago now, and for many of us players it now ranks as one of our favorite sets. From a design perspective, what do you think most contributed to this set’s feeling of being an “instant classic”?
Markrosewater · 2026-05-15
Can a card care about “when you pay an additional cost” or “when you pay an alternative cost” in general? I know there are cards that care about specific ones, like kicker and warp, but I’m curious if a card could just care about them in general.
Markrosewater · 2026-05-15
What about Augury Adept is a break? Blue life gain, white card draw, or both?
Markrosewater · 2026-05-15
Are we likely to see another remastered set?
Markrosewater · 2026-05-15
“There’s no set I’ve done that doesn’t have things I would have done differently if I made them today” What would you have done differently about Reality Fracture?
Markrosewater · 2026-05-15
If Augury Adept is a break, does that mean Turn to a Pumpkin is as well?
Markrosewater · 2026-05-15
I wanna offer, as a Magic player who fills out those surveys, I can barely buy products. Has Wizards considered that people who formerly played but stopped are still worth asking for feedback, if only to know why they left?
Markrosewater · 2026-05-15
Interestingly, white caring about having less life than an opponent makes it care somewhat about life loss.
Markrosewater · 2026-05-15
Is Sugar Coat a break or is the use case so low that it isn’t?
Markrosewater · 2026-05-15
Mark, That was an incredibly condescending response to the question about surveys. They asked, “Are there other surveys for people like me?” — meaning lapsed players — and you told them “to take surveys for which you are part of the intended audience.” That’s what they’re asking you how to do, Mark! You’ve spoken at length about how WOTC’s market research includes understanding why lapsed players leave the game and identifying ways to bring them back. But when a lapsed player asks how to provide that feedback, that’s the response they get? We’re constantly told that decisions about the direction of the game come from “extensive market research,” yet questions about those directional changes are mysteriously absent from the surveys we actually see. How does the most negative outcome of those decisions — players leaving the game — get analyzed in this “extensive market research” if feedback from those players is willfully never solicited?
