Maro on "Set Constructed" and "Plane Constructed" — For anyone wondering if R&D playtests Bloomburrow-only or Strixhaven-only formats: they don't. Design & Lore

Maro's Best Design Decision: Consolidating the Color Pie — When asked about his single most important contribution to Magic, Rosewater didn't hesitate: consolidating the color pie. Not a specific card or mechanic — the foundational framework that makes every set work. Hard to argue with that one. Read more

Sorcery Creatures? The Rules Say No — Someone asked Maro about sorcery creatures à la enchantment creatures for SOS's sorcery-matters theme. His answer: the rules literally don't allow permanents to be instants or sorceries, so it was never even on the table. The constraint forced the design team to find more creative solutions for boosting sorcery asfan. Read more

Trybrid Mana is an "If" — Three-color hybrid mana has been tried internally and it's both aesthetically ugly and mechanically unnecessary. Don't hold your breath. Read more

Backup Likely to Return — Maro says backup from March of the Machine is "more likely to return than not." Good news for fans of the flexible +1/+1 counter mechanic that played beautifully in limited and constructed alike. Read more

Enchantment Creatures as One-Offs? — Maro is personally fine with sprinkling individual enchantment creatures into sets where it makes flavor sense, though he's unsure how the rest of R&D feels. Could open the door for more Theros-flavored designs outside dedicated enchantment sets. Read more

Red vs. Black Philosophy — A great Maro breakdown for Vorthos and game designers alike: Black seeks power through calculated opportunity and total control. Red seeks freedom through authentic emotional expression. Same "I do what I want" energy, completely different motivations. Read more

Kithkin Staying Unique — Despite player requests to errata Kithkin into Halflings for tribal synergies, Wizards wants to preserve Kithkin as a Magic-original creature type. However, Maro noted that cards could reference both types if they coexist on the same world. Read more

No More Mutate — Maro is skeptical we'll ever see another mutate-style mechanic. Humans already have enormous advantages in Magic, and they don't need the additional boost that a universal mutate would provide. Read more

Multi-Plane Sets Still Possible — Sets spanning two planes simultaneously are an "if" on the Storm Scale, but Maro believes it's more likely to happen than not eventually. Aetherdrift didn't kill the concept. Read more

when/if: a set focusing on two planes at the same time? curious if aetherdrift hurt the chances of that happening

Oh hi Mark, Wondering for SOS if Sorcery Creatures alike Enchantment Creatures was raised in design and whether or not it would’ve been viable for all the metrics wanted for increasing the sorcery asfan?

What is your advice for when you become “too proficient” with the decks you have built that opponents in the power level range of your deck get decimated, but you also don’t want to deliberately make your decks weaker? I am not finding it fun playing versus decks that are “win on the spot at any turn” (or infinite combos) either, because these are the only ones that can stand up to me at the moment, even when I am able to beat them. Really struggling here.

Apart from Magic: The Gathering, have you played any of the other games created by Richard Garfield? And if so, do you have a favorite?

So, with the newfound existence of paradigm, has epic officially moved to 10 (from its previous 9) on the storm scale?
Markrosewater · 2026-04-14
If Reach was changed to include Horsemanship, do you think there’s a chance we could see a set use Horsemanship instead of Flying?
Markrosewater · 2026-04-14
Can you make more rooms?
Markrosewater · 2026-04-14
Can we see enchantment creatures as one offs where it makes sense? Like one or a few enchantment creatures in a set just for flavor?
Markrosewater · 2026-04-14
Do you think you could do a whole drive to work about creaturelands, maybe with a special section for Dryad Arbor?

Hello Mark! Thanks for taking your time to answer questions! I know R&D optimizes each set for standard and limited, but how much attention does “set constructed” get for each set? How about “plane constructed”? My wife and I got into Magic through Bloomburrow (there’s no way she would have started playing if it weren’t for Mabel), and I’m curious if R&D considers Bloomburrow balanced within itself (e.g. Frogs vs. Mice, Bats vs. whatever…) and if might consider Bloomburrow part 1 when it develops Bloomburrow 2 so they meld well together.

Hi Mark! Regarding the questions about Kithkin and Halfling. It’s possible to create cards that reference Universe Beyond and Universe Within exclusive creature types? Like a Commander that references Kithkin and also Halfling?
