Commander Clash: Only Pre-2003 Cards Legal MTGGoldfish's crew cut out two decades of power creep by restricting themselves to cards printed before 2003. No Dockside, no Smothering Tithe, no Cyclonic Rift — just good old-fashioned Odyssey-block jank and actual fair Magic. Source

Etali, Primal Conqueror — Hot and Cold Cards EDHREC's Fire and Ice series examines which cards are trending up and down in Etali builds. If you're still windmill-slamming every green ramp spell, it might be time to reassess what actually closes games when you flip off the top. Source

Competitive Scene

MaRo on Control's Place in Standard A player asked why WotC supports control strategies that "prevent others from playing." MaRo's answer: control has its fans, and Play Design monitors format share. If control is dominating your Arena queue, expect the pendulum to swing — it always does. Source

The Pro Tour Riot of 1997 — A Magic History Deep Dive MTGGoldfish revisits one of competitive Magic's wildest moments: the actual riot at Pro Tour Los Angeles in 1997. Tournament logistics, heated players, and an era when organized play was still figuring itself out. A fascinating read for anyone who thinks modern tournament drama is bad. Source

Limited & Draft

The Ultimate Guide to Pauper on MTG Arena Draftsim's updated guide covers everything you need to know about Arena's Pauper format — card pool differences from paper Pauper, top archetypes, and why commons-only Magic is a great way to sharpen your limited fundamentals without spending wildcards. Wilds of Eldraine's Lasting Design Impact MaRo credits Wilds of Eldraine with pushing creative draft archetype theming beyond faction sets. If you've noticed recent limited environments feeling more flavorfully cohesive, WOE was the proof of concept. Source

Finance & Market

Weekly Price Spikes: Tasigur Leads a Quiet Week Tasigur, the Golden Fang headlines an otherwise calm market cycle. Premodern continues to quietly move needles, and the Dandan Secret Lair scalper fiasco is the elephant in the room nobody wants to discuss. Source

MTGStocks Weekly Winners: Premodern Drives Two Spikes Two of this week's three winners come from the Premodern format, reinforcing that the format's player base is growing enough to move markets. The third winner is a Commander staple described as "quite the dilemma" — worth checking if it's in your collection. Source

The 25 Most Valuable Sets in Magic Draftsim's updated rankings remind us that Post Malone's $2M The One Ring put Magic finance on mainstream radar, but Alpha through Legends still dominate the top of the list. A good reference if you're evaluating sealed product investments. Source

Design & Lore

Epic Stays at 9 on the Storm Scale — But Is There Design Space Nearby? A player asked MaRo whether a mechanic capturing Epic's flavor without the "no more spells" restriction could exist. His answer: a mechanic that stops you from casting spells is fundamentally hard to bring back, and Legendary Sorceries already explored adjacent space. Epic fans, keep dreaming. Source

New Capenna Return: "At Some Point," But Not Soon MaRo acknowledged that New Capenna's first visit wasn't a home run, so a return likely won't happen for a while. If you're a fan of the art deco demon crime families, patience is the name of the game. Source

MDFCs: Designed as Modal Cards, Not "Lands with Upside" When asked whether MDFCs are designed as lands-first or spells-first, MaRo clarified the team views them as truly modal — neither side is the "default." This design philosophy explains why some MDFCs feel like premium spells with a land backup while others feel like lands with upside. Source

"Understand Who Does Like a Design You Don't" MaRo's answer to "what constraint do you wish players understood?" is a masterclass in design empathy: before critiquing a card, try to identify the player it was designed for. Not every card is for every player, and that's the whole point of a 30-year-old game with dozens of formats. Source

WotC Still Looking for Lore-Only Character Card Outlets With Commander precons tied to Standard sets and supplemental sets phased out, there's a gap in how WotC prints cards for lore characters without current story relevance. MaRo confirms they're "on the lookout" for a product to fill that niche. Vorthos players, your patience may yet be rewarded. Source

That's the digest for March 21. Havana is on the horizon, Rats are swarming, and Deadpool is power creeping your childhood favorites. Shuffle up.

I know you said Epic is a 9 on the Storm scale as of the last time you were asked that I can find (https://markrosewater.tumblr.com/post/682460061910663168/where-is-epic-on-the-storm-scale-and-do-you-think) but do you think it’s possible that something that retains some of Epic’s flavour but has a wider design space could show up? Or was this already done with Legendary Sorcery in Dominaria (which I know is almost as high on the Storm scale as of https://markrosewater.tumblr.com/post/617020493435928576/on-the-heels-of-the-historic-question-where-are)? And on that topic, did you have anything to do with the flavour text on Karn’s Temporal Sundering?

Hi Mark! May I put a request in for more Capenna? I love the glitz and glamour, and particularly want to see more planeswalkers in elegant attire. Thank you for your attention to this matter, and, of course, for making Magic.
Markrosewater · 2026-03-21
Hi Mark, I hope this doesn’t sound salty—I’m genuinely curious. You often emphasize fun in card design, so why support control strategies so much? From my experience, about a third of decks playing standard on Arena are control decks that shut down everything the opponent does counting on they give up after half an hour. I understand fun is subjective, but promoting strategies that prevent others from playing at all feels questionable.

Could mono-green ever get a Nantuko Husk effect? Like a creature that acts as a free sac outlet to pump it? I could see an insect having that effect in green without being a zombie.

What’s a design constraint you wish more people were aware of when critiquing cards?
Markrosewater · 2026-03-21
While Party Crasher doesn’t work within the rules, Alexios, Deimos of Kosmos (from ACR) does a pretty good impression of this kind of effect.

For a time, we were told Legions was the best-selling set of all time. So it clearly did better than its large set predecessor Onslaught. No question really, but it shows there were some exceptions to the rule.

Markrosewater · 2026-03-21
Hello Mark. I was wondering about more modern sets and I wanted to know one impact Wilds of Eldraine had on future magic sets.
Markrosewater · 2026-03-21
Re https://markrosewater.tumblr.com/post/811656387549659136/i-know-you-said-epic-is-a-9-on-the-storm-scale-as, what I was asking about wasn’t the current Storm scale rating of either mechanic, but rather whether you think Legendary Sorcery captured the flavour of Epic without its worse drawbacks, and further, to the extent that it didn’t, whether you think there’s room for another mechanic with that same flavour in that space. Also are Helldozer and Hex still your most recent contributions to black-border flavour text?

Markrosewater · 2026-03-21
Hello Mark, If I recall correctly, generally speaking, Iconic Species tend to show up more at higher rarities (rare or mythic), rather than lower. However, looking at them, we see the following ratios for sub-rare) Angels: 90/262 (~34%) Sphinges: 20/82 (~24%) Demons: 53/210 (~25%) Dragons: 119/408 (~29%) Hydrae: 9/66 (~14%) Obviously there’s a popularity variation, but even among the more comparable sized groups (Angels and Demons; Sphinges and Hydrae), we see rather distinct uncommon-or-lower ratios. Is there any specific reason behind this? What makes Hydrae harder to print below rare, and Angels easier to do so? Thanks!
Markrosewater · 2026-03-21
Hi mark, based on a previous question I saw for the record, I wanna say I am a player who very much enjoys the experience of playing against a control deck. I think people who don’t like control decks think of them only as something that stomps on the other players fun, and I think the information that people do enjoy playing against control is important
