March Commandness Bracket Tournament Rolls Into Round Three EDHREC's annual bracket madness continues with Round Three of the North and South conferences now live for voting, plus Round Two of the West conference wrapping up. If you haven't been following along, this is the community's yearly slugfest to crown the most beloved commanders — get your votes in before the window closes.

Lorwyn Eclipsed Brings Back Grub, Storied Matriarch We're finally returning to Lorwyn-Shadowmoor, and the Rakdos Goblin fanatics are eating well. EDHREC has a full deck tech on Grub, Storied Matriarch from the new Lorwyn Eclipsed set — if you've been waiting for a legendary Goblin matriarch to helm your aristocrats build, this is your moment.

MaRo on Modern Aesthetics in Magic Worlds A fan asked about jeans, VHS tapes, and TVs showing up on Magic cards. Rosewater's take is straightforward: modern elements work when they fit the world (Duskmourn's 80s horror, New Capenna's art deco), but would feel wrong on a plane like Innistrad. "There's no one right answer — different players have different lines."

How Popular Is Green, Actually? EDHREC's REC Your Deck series drops a deep dive arguing you're wrong about green. The data on color balance might surprise you — green's dominance narrative doesn't hold up the way the community assumes.

Commander Corner

Under-the-Radar TMNT Commander Staples Everyone's brewing around Cool But Rude and Super Shredder, but MTGStocks highlights the sleeper hits from the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles set that could become long-term Commander staples. Grab these while they're cheap and under the radar.

Infinite Pizza Is Real and It's Spectacular Draftsim breaks down a meme-worthy infinite combo using Everything Pizza, a TMNT common that has no business enabling game-ending loops. The fact that this works in Limited is both hilarious and terrifying — keep your eyes open for it in draft pods.

Five Ways to Slot The Ooze Into Your 99 The Ooze from TMNT creates Mutant tokens in a way we haven't seen before, and EDHREC explores five different commander shells where it shines — from token doublers to sacrifice engines.

Three Temur Brews Worth Your Time If you're looking to branch out from the usual Simic value piles, EDHREC's Branching Out series offers three Temur temptations that lean into the color combination's chaotic identity rather than just goodstuff.

Powerful Cards We Refuse to Play The Commander Clash crew discusses their personal ban lists — cards that are objectively strong but they just won't sleeve up. Sometimes the social contract hits harder than the power level.

Am I the Bolas? Fetch Land Follow-Up The saga of "Game Changer Fetches" gets a follow-up. If you missed the original debate about fetch land etiquette in Commander, this one's a spicy read.

Budget Doubling Season Replacements Doubling Season still commands a premium price tag. EDHREC runs down the best budget alternatives that get you 80% of the effect at 20% of the cost — essential reading for anyone building counters or tokens on a budget.

Top Ten Sorceries in cEDH The oft-forgotten sibling of instants gets its due. EDHREC ranks the top sorceries in cEDH, with Finale of Devastation predictably near the top. If you're tuning a competitive list, check if you're missing any of these.

Splinter, Radical Rat Commander Guide Draftsim has a full deck guide for Splinter, Radical Rat — a typal ninja commander that doesn't rely on ninjutsu or sneak. It's a surprisingly deep build-around.

Competitive Scene

Can Affinity Come Back in Standard? MTGGoldfish's Single Scoop asks the question we've all been wondering: how many Affinity cards does it take to make the archetype viable again? The artifact aggro dream lives on — whether the mana base supports it is another story.

Best Standard Deck Ever Tournament: Fires vs. UW Rev Control The nostalgia bracket continues with Fires of Yavimaya (2001) squaring off against Sphinx's Revelation Control (2013). Two completely different eras of Standard gameplay collide in the Top 64.

MaRo on Legacy Design Hits A Legacy player thanked Rosewater for Exploration and Argothian Enchantress as "fixed but not overpowered" versions of Fastbond and Verduran Enchantress. MaRo acknowledged the wins — a nice reminder that Urza block wasn't all Tinker and Yawgmoth's Bargain.

Limited & Draft

You're Using 17Lands Wrong The MTGGoldfish crew has been grinding Limited and has strong opinions on how the community misuses 17Lands data. If you're the type to windmill slam whatever has the highest GIH win rate without context, this episode is for you.

MaRo on Inter-Set Draft Formats Asked about bringing back block-style cross-set drafting, Rosewater gave a blunt one-word answer: "If." Sets just draft better alone than mixed together. Don't hold your breath for a return to three-pack block drafts.

MaRo Misses Blind Sealed When asked what he misses from early Magic, Rosewater pointed to sealed events where nobody had seen the cards. In the age of full spoiler seasons weeks before release, that experience is basically extinct — and honestly, it hits different when you're cracking packs completely blind.

Finance & Market

Dandân Secret Lair Drops — Scalper Crisis Follows The long-awaited Dandân Secret Lair hit the Chaos Vault on Monday, turning the beloved casual format into an official product. But as Draftsim reports, scalpers are already causing headaches, snapping up copies and inflating secondary market prices. If you want one to actually play, act fast.

Commander's Arsenal Resurfaces After 13 Years One of the earliest Commander products is back on players' radar. Commander's Arsenal from 2012 was packed with staples and premium printings — if you find one in the wild, it's a treasure chest of value.

Best Red ETB Cards Ranked Draftsim dropped a comprehensive ranking of 41 red enters-the-battlefield effects. Dockside Extortionist still sits at the top of the mountain, but there are some deep cuts here worth considering for your blink and flicker builds.

The 68 Best Cantrips in Magic From Preordain to the obscure, Draftsim's cantrip ranking is a useful reference for any format where card selection matters. If you're optimizing a spell-slinger deck, bookmark this one.

Where to Get Cards Graded In Person For the collectors in the audience, Draftsim compiled seven locations offering in-person card grading. If you've got high-value cardboard sitting in a binder, it might be time to protect that investment.

Design & Lore

Why Equipment Can't Be Negative A fan asked why there are no "negative equipment" like Pacifism-style auras you attach to opponents' creatures. Rosewater explained the design team deliberately left that space for Auras to maintain their identity. Whether we'll ever see a "Grasp" mechanic that equips to opposing creatures remains firmly in "if" territory.

MaRo's Proudest Land Cycle: Shocklands Asked about his favorite dual land design, Rosewater didn't hesitate — shock lands take the crown. His biggest regret? The Future Sight dual land cycles "had room for improvement." An honest self-assessment from Magic's head designer.

No Casting Cost ≠ Zero: The Spike + Contraptions Ruling In a fun Uncommander corner case, a player asked if Spike, Tournament Grinder could fetch a Contraption and cast it for free. MaRo's ruling: you can grab it, but no casting cost means it literally cannot be cast — it's not the same as {0}. File this one away for your next silver-border night.

I have a scenario that I came up with over a year ago that’s still generating comments on a reddit thread, so: With R&D’s Secret Lair (“Ignore cards as written. Ignore all errata.”) and Yurlok of Scorch Thrash (“A player losing unspent mana causes that player to lose that much life.”) in play, does Mox Lotus’s “You don’t lose life due to mana burn” also prevent you from losing life due to Yurlok’s text, or does it not count as mana burn even though it’s losing unspent mana causing life loss?

As someone who’s played both Lands and Enchantress in Legacy, can I say “thank you” for making fixed-but-not-overpowered versions of Fastbond and Verduran Enchantress in Urza block with Exploration and Argothian Enchantress respectively? I know you missed on cards like Tinker and Yawgmoth’s Bargain but I think those hit the sweet spot.
