Set News

MaRo Unofficially Blesses 8-Card Pauper EDH Attraction Decks. In a classic Blogatog moment, Mark Rosewater acknowledged that having only 8 common Attractions was not intentional — and in his capacity as Un-Rules Manager, he supports an 8-Attraction minimum for Pauper EDH. Of course, he cheerfully notes he has zero authority to make it official. If your playgroup runs Dee Kay, consider this your blessing from on high. (Source)

Bracket 3 Commanders Getting Fresh Spotlight. Draftsim highlights four underrated Bracket 3 commanders worth sleeving up, including Rashmi, Eternities Crafter. If you're looking for that sweet spot of powerful-but-not-oppressive, this is your guide. (Source)

UB Set Timelines: Four Years Minimum. Rosewater confirmed that a tentpole Universes Beyond set starting development today wouldn't see print for at least four years. So whatever franchise you're hoping to see in cardboard form, start being patient now. (Source)

Commander Corner

Chrome Dome Combo Breakdown. EDHREC's Too-Specific Top 10 series dives into the top combo lines for Chrome Dome, featuring some spicy artifact synergies that Mathias Kollros's art only makes more menacing. If you like your value engines with a side of infinite loops, this is required reading. (Source)

Turtle Typal Is Real and It's Spectacular. The Pride of Hull Clade finally gives Turtle typal the commander it deserves. EDHREC's build leans into the Simic shell (pun intended) with +1/+1 counter synergies and genuinely surprising tribal density. Cowabunga indeed. (Source)

Bebop & Rocksteady Set Sail in Partner. The TMNT crossover keeps delivering — Bebop and Rocksteady bring a partner pairing that wants to turn sideways and smash. EDHREC breaks down how to build around their combat-focused triggers in a Gruul-adjacent shell. (Source)

Xyris Hot & Cold Card Analysis. EDHREC's Fire and Ice series examines which cards are trending in and out of Xyris, the Writhing Storm lists. If you're on the "let everyone draw, then punish them for it" plan, check which tech is currently overperforming. (Source)

Desalting Your Pod: Fun Alternatives to the Saltiest Commanders. Grand Arbiter got you catching dirty looks across the table? EDHREC's list offers less salt-inducing swaps for the format's ten most groan-worthy commanders — same strategic identity, fewer flipped tables. (Source)

Hidden Gems for Sauron, the Dark Lord. The Thought Vessel crew unearths overlooked includes for Sauron builds, going beyond the obvious Amass payoffs to find cards that most brewers are sleeping on. (Source)

Commander Challenge Web App Updated. A community-built site for running Commander Challenges with your pod got a fresh round of improvements. Worth bookmarking if your playgroup likes structured league play. (Source)

Rebuilding Gornog After Theft — Community Rallies. A player whose Gornog, the Red Reaper warrior-tribal deck was stolen is crowdsourcing upgrade ideas. The thread is a reminder that cowards still can't block warriors, and the community still has your back. (Source)

Competitive Scene

Ruby Storm and MDFCs on the Rise in Modern. With Boros Energy continuing its stranglehold on Modern, MTGStocks flags Ruby Storm and MDFC-heavy builds as the decks best positioned to compete. Keep an eye on staple prices for these archetypes if you're looking to pick a lane against the Energy menace. (Source)

TMNT Week 1 in Legacy. Joe Dyer reports on Turtles making a genuine splash in Legacy — not just memes, actual competitive results. The format is adapting to new creature-based threats in ways that feel reminiscent of early Uro days. (Source)

Sewer-veillance Cam in Vintage. The latest Vintage 101 covers how Sewer-veillance Cam is slotting into the format's artifact-heavy shells. It's doing real work in a metagame where graveyard interaction is at a premium. (Source)

Mutagen Token Combo in Standard. SaffronOlive goes deep on The Obsessive Pursuit of Mutagen token combo in Standard — a classic Against the Odds brew that asks "what if we made a lot of these?" Results are exactly as chaotic as you'd hope. (Source)

Play Design Controls Premier Removal Timing. MaRo clarified that decisions about when to print aggressively costed removal like Cut Down or Go for the Throat sit squarely with the Play Design team, not vision design. Format health dictates the cadence. (Source)

Limited & Draft

The Fight Mechanic Origin Story. Rosewater dropped some design history on Fight — it was R&D's long-sought answer to giving green creature removal in Limited without undermining the color's core weaknesses. A neat peek behind the curtain for anyone who takes color pie philosophy seriously. (Source)

First Strike Still Evergreen, Relax. Despite periodic community anxiety, MaRo confirms first strike isn't in danger of losing evergreen status, even though its defensive nature can punish attacking. Sleep easy, Boros aggro players. (Source)

Downside Mechanics: Don't Hold Your Breath. Cumulative upkeep, echo, and "leech" costs aren't coming back in a big way. Rosewater notes that downside mechanics are simply unpopular with most players, so they'll remain a sparingly used tool. (Source)

New Player Foundations Deck Help. A new player building their first deck from the Foundations Beginner Box is getting solid community advice on r/magicTCG — a great thread to share with anyone you're onboarding. (Source)

Mashup Draft Set Pairings Discussion. Limited enthusiasts are theorycrafting which sets share enough archetype overlap to draft together. If you've ever wanted to shuffle up MOM with another set for a custom draft night, this thread has ideas. (Source)

Finance & Market

Biophagus vs. Animal Attendant: Budget Wins. Draftsim puts the new in-universe reprint Animal Attendant head-to-head against Biophagus and finds the budget option holds up shockingly well. If you've been holding off on a $15 mana dork, your patience may have paid off. (Source)

LotR Scene Boxes: Worth It in 2026? Draftsim revisits the Tales of Middle-earth Scene Boxes with updated market data. The verdict is nuanced — collector appeal remains, but the EV math has shifted since release. (Source)

Proxy King Review. Draftsim goes hands-on with Proxy King for a full review. With proxy play rising alongside Commander's popularity, this is a practical look at print quality, card feel, and whether it's worth the money for casual tables. (Source)

WotC Won't Reprint Old Sets — Here's Why. Rosewater reiterated that once a set goes out of print, they've promised not to reprint it wholesale. The trading card game's collectability remains a core pillar, even as players clamor for flashback draft experiences of original Innistrad and Ravnica. Remastered sets were the compromise, and even those have wound down. (Source)

Design & Lore

Design Files: Mirrodin, Part 2. Rosewater continues his deep dive into the original Mirrodin design file handoff — this four-part series is a goldmine for anyone who geeks out over how artifact-centric sets get balanced (or don't). Part 2 covers the decisions that would ultimately define an era. (Source)

Artifact Tokens Aren't Going Anywhere. In response to a fan asking WotC to pump the brakes on predefined artifact tokens, MaRo acknowledged the pace will slow over time but confirmed they're a proven, effective design tool. Clues, Treasure, Food, Maps, Blood, Mutagens — the toolkit keeps growing, even if each new addition draws diminishing novelty. (Source)

Phyrexians > Eldrazi for Design Fun. When asked which iconic villain type is more fun to design for, Rosewater didn't hesitate: Phyrexians. One word, no elaboration. The compleat answer. (Source)

Universes Beyond Driving Broader MaRo Exposure. A Tumblr user theorized that MaRo's growing audience is partly driven by MTG now intersecting with Avatar, LotR, MCU, and Final Fantasy fandoms. Rosewater's response: "That's a fine guess." The Venn diagram of TCG players and IP fans keeps expanding. (Source)

Finding Positivity in Magic. In a heartfelt exchange, a player asked how to stay dedicated to the game when online negativity feels overwhelming. MaRo's advice: find pockets of positivity, lean into in-person play, and seek out communities like MagicCons where the love for the game is palpable. A good reminder as the discourse cycle spins ever faster. (Source)

---

That's the wrap for March 13. Turtles are everywhere — from Commander tables to Legacy top 8s — Ruby Storm is the Modern deck to watch, and MaRo wants you to know that Phyrexians are simply more fun to design. Shuffle up and stay positive out there.

Hello Mr. Rose Water. My playgroup is just getting into pauper EDH and one of my friends discovered that there are only 8 common attractions, so he can’t build a functional, legal deck with Dee Kay at the helm. Was keeping the number of common attractions below 10 intentional so as to keep them out of 60 card Pauper, perhaps for power level reasons?

Why make a promise not to reprint a set? I started playing 10 years ago and would love the chance to do innistrad, mirrodin, worldwake, original ravnica, etc. We sort of had that with remastered but now even those are gone. It would be great to have a yearly rerelease, even if priced at a remastered level, which would help those of us who missed these sets (or those of us who didn’t miss them but love them), and fill in gaps during UB products we dont love. Thanks.

have planeswalker tokens (aside from copies) ever been considered for a set? do you think there’s any way that could be done effectively?
Markrosewater · 2026-03-13
Is plain old First Strike (that is, not First Strike when attacking, or has First Strike if condition) in any danger of falling from Evergreen? You’ve mentioned in the past its use is limited due to how it punishes attacking into it.
