Set News

Edge of Eternities info hub is live. AetherHub has a running spoiler and product tracker for the next premier set. Still early days, but bookmark it if you want to stay ahead of preview season. Full details

TMNT spoiler season is firing on all cylinders. Day 1 and Day 2 reveals have the community buzzing — the Sneak mechanic is looking genuinely pushed, with Shredder doubling as removal and a counters-matter archetype shaping up to be the real deal. Lessons From Life and Shredder, Shadow Master are the early shell shockers drawing the most debate. Day 1 | Day 2 | Shell Shockers breakdown

Spider-Man spoilers keep rolling in. J. Jonah Jameson is the consensus breakout card from the reveal — the community is high on it and the hype seems warranted. Spectacular Spider-Man is also generating meta discussion as the latest sac-protect variant with a hidden blocking body. Spider-Man hub | JJJ breakdown | Spectacular analysis

Lorwyn Eclipsed final leaks go official. Wizards decided to just spoil the last three rares after the MEGALEAK series, including a new Luminarch Aspirant variant. The Black Council podcast dropped their top 10 preview cards if you want a consolidated take. Megaleak finale | Top 10 podcast

Hexing Squelcher: hype or sleeper? The counterspell-counter is drawing comparisons to the old Vexing Shusher. History suggests these effects look scarier in spoiler season than they play out in practice, but the Standard context is different this time. Analysis

Standard manabase post-Edge of Eternities is a problem. The rotation disparity is playing out exactly as predicted — the gap between the haves and have-nots in fixing is real and widening. Worth keeping in mind for your post-rotation brews. Rant

2025 Standard Rotation retrospective. This will be the last rotation on the old schedule before the shift to 2027 first-set timing. AetherHub has final rankings for the departing sets. Overview

B&R update: Commander only. Two cards unbanned, one becomes a Game Changer. Paper Constructed formats untouched this cycle. Full announcement

Commander Corner

Ashling, the Limitless is Lorwyn Eclipsed's most popular new commander. MTGStocks dug into the hidden gems — the cards that won't show up in every stock list but will make your build stand out from the dozens of identical Ashling decks on day one. Hidden gems

TMNT Commander precon decklist is out. If you're eyeing the precon for value or as an upgrade shell, the full list is available for review. Decklist

Leatherhead, Iron Gator deck tech. The mono-green TMNT cards are quietly some of the most interesting designs in the set. EDHREC has a full build guide. Deck tech

Edgar Markov gets a modern facelift. Commander Makeover tackles one of the most iconic vampire commanders with updated card choices from recent sets. If your Edgar list hasn't been touched in two years, this is worth a read. Makeover

EDHREC's guide to Humans in Commander. A comprehensive tribal primer covering the best commanders, staples, and build strategies for the most ubiquitous creature type in Magic. Guide

Arcades, the Strategist: hot and cold cards. Data-driven look at which walls are overplayed and which are underrated in Arcades builds. Fire and Ice

MaRo on Spirit Guides and legendary errata. Don't hold your breath for new Spirit Guide variants — play balance concerns make them unlikely. And Ali from Cairo won't be getting legendary added, as WotC has a firm policy against functional errata that adds the supertype. Spirit Guides | Legendary errata

Competitive Scene

January 2026 Standard meta snapshot. Mono Red has restabilized its position at the top, Dimir's grip has finally loosened, and Mono Green Landfall is back after getting temporarily pushed out. The meta feels healthier than it has in months. Meta report

Superior Spider-Man quietly cementing a meta presence. A month after release, the card has crept into reanimator shells and midrange lists. Not a format-warper, but a persistent role-player that's here to stay. Revisit

Avatar bending abilities meta check. Firebending and Earthbend are the clear Standard winners from the Avatar crossover. Airbend and Waterbend haven't broken through yet but have promising shells in development. Breakdown

5 budget Standard decks with only 5 rares each. Perfect for new Arena players or anyone looking to grind without burning wildcards. Budget builds

Finance & Market

Bitterbloom Bearer is Lorwyn Eclipsed's money card. The flash is what separates this from just another inevitability engine — it fundamentally changes how opponents have to play around it. Still generating heated debate a week post-leak. Analysis

Underpriced Lorwyn Eclipsed cards for Commander. MTGStocks highlights the cheap pickups with spike potential before the casual crowd catches on. Get in now or pay double in two months. Picks

Boros Energy heating up Modern prices. The archetype's meta share is climbing and staple prices are following. If you need pieces for the deck, the window is closing. Price movements

Price memory explained. MTGStocks breaks down why some cards stubbornly hold prices above their "true" value and how to factor that into your buying decisions. Solid educational piece for finance-minded players. Deep dive

15 most valuable Secret Lair Commander deck cards. Some of these have gotten surprisingly pricey. Worth checking if you're sitting on any unsleeved value. List

Design & Lore

MaRo on asymmetric vs. symmetric effects. The shift away from symmetrical designs (Moat, The Abyss) toward one-sided effects is deliberate, not power creep. WotC believes it creates better play patterns and is what most players prefer — though symmetric designs haven't been abandoned entirely. Discussion | Follow-up

How do you know a mechanic has enough design space? MaRo says you get a feel for it quickly once you start actually making cards — it's pattern recognition that builds with experience. Short answer but revealing about how early-stage design actually works. Answer

Protection's complexity vs. flavor tradeoff. MaRo acknowledges protection is complex but says it keeps showing up because it's so flavorful that designers get "sucked in." Explains why it appears without reminder text more often than you'd expect for a keyword that trips up new players. Post

Stan Sakai Secret Lair art is gorgeous. The Usagi Yojimbo-inspired illustrations are getting love from the community, with the colors and animal designs drawing people into the source material. Reddit thread

Secret Lair production timelines. MaRo confirms Secret Lair has the shortest turnaround of any product, but it's still "a lot more time than you'd guess." Even the fastest pipeline takes many months from contract to ship. Response

I have to give a shoutout to two cards I love, Sunderflock from ECL and Monument to Endurance from DFT. They let me cling on to hope while I’m losing game after game on Arena, and occasionally allow me to win games, too. I know I’m not the first person to notice that they’re strong cards but high fives to their designer(s).

I always felt that a big part if early Magic’s flavor stemmed from many of its big splashy effects were completely symmetrical (Abyss, Chains of Mephistopholes, Karma, Moat, Island Sanctuary, etc…) while very few fell into the category of “rules for thee but not for me.” It feels like that balance has swung much closer to 80/20 or even 90/10 in recent times. Is that a conscious design decision or simply an aspect of power creep?

Hi Mark, a question(s). Which product can you put out the fastest, and what is the approximate time required for it? Say a company with a product launching in 6 months approaches you for a collab. What product if any can you offer within this timeframe? Lair? Commander deck? Generally how much time does a Commander deck require to be ready to ship from the point of contract signing?
Markrosewater · 2026-03-08
Is a world with asymmetrically-coloured factions (like, for example, GW, WR, RU, UB, BG) likely? Why/why not?
Markrosewater · 2026-03-08
“It’s a conscious decision. We believe it’s both a better play pattern and what the majority of players prefer.” Just adding my 2 cents, I’m a big fan of splashy, symmetrical designs

Hope you are well! Given that in recent years qe have seena few examples of Mass Erratas on creature type lines for “no reason” mostly due to the introduction of a new type deemed more suitable, is there any chance at all that we might get an errata for Ali From Cairo giving him legendary? I dont really play commander at all because i am mostly interested in competive sixty card, but Ali as a commander to explore self damage and symetrical damage as a concept is legitimately a prospect that interests me. This seems like a pretty low impact Errata on the grand scheme of things! Understandable if not, just figured I should ask.

I hope to see the Skeleton from Necropotence as a creature for commander at some point. I mean look at the sick artworks. Question is what should the card do? For sure something with a synergy to necropotence itself. What do you think? Also more skeletons are always welcome!
